My main role was contributor to the Apache FOP open source project and this contribution was recognised on the project's public web site. Seven of the improvements in release 2.9 were my own work, from layout manager improvements to PDF structure corrections.

In this role I have had the opportunity to consolidate my software development skills by working in mobile application development (Android) , back-end systems (Java, C++ & C) and web development (Python and Angular). I have been proposing value propositions to customers and leading projects through from concept to implementation, test and delivery. I have been leading projects and working collaboratively, following agile development practices, using toolsets such as Atlassian (Stash, Git, JIRA, Confluence), JUnit, Gmock, dexmaker, mockito, Clover and Jenkins.Also, on the back-end, I have continued to push the research agenda, devising and implementing a proof-of-concept employing the Esper Complex Event Processing engine to provide a step-change in the performance of pattern-matching across event streams.I have also undertaken an enterprise solution design role, specialising in cyber-defense, using technologies such as ESB, CEP and ETL.

On returning to Research and Venturing I conceived, defined, developed and patented technologies which attracted high-level engagement from within and outside BT. I worked collaboratively with a UK company supplying authentication technology and a French telco to leverage our respective technology strengths to mutual advantage.I also worked with the corporate incubator again to assess the commercial potential of this new work; the output of that assessment confirmed that the work represented a viable business proposition and another spin-out candidate.From April '08 I returned my efforts to addressing the needs of the enterprise computing space. One piece of work produced a novel business activity monitoring prototype and another is active in exploring opportunities in enterprise cloud computing.I continued to perform key roles across the project life-cycle from proposition conception through design, implementation, mentoring of junior developers, partner management and communications to stake-holder management.

Erica was spun-out via BT’s corporate incubator over this period and I was a key player in securing the first customer order, building the solution and completing the technology transfer into the incuband. iO Global Ltd was incorporated in May 2005 and continues to enjoy successful international trading (http://www.io-me.com).

Erica was an innovative solution for managing partner access to enterprise resources. I played a central role in defining the Erica concept and proposition and realising that vision through prototype to trial and finally, delivering on a commercial sale to a mobile operator in Malaysia. During this period, I was a key contributor to the innovation process, performing various roles including generating patent filings, core platform solution design authority, implementation, delivery manager, developer training, developer relations and trial manager. I presented the work to many high-profile audiences including industry executives and professional awards judges. In 2004 I led a package of work which specified, costed and delivered a location-based service trial. Development was a extended team effort and despite agreed requirements creep, the trial was delivered ahead of time and under budget.
