I’ve met or was introduced to the majority of my connections while working at TD. I started working for Canada Trust while still a student in University. When I graduated, I stayed on and when TD bought Canada Trust, I stayed. I had worked for TD Canada Trust for 26 years with a lot of bright, amazing people. I fully expected to retire from the bank. And then, the unexpected happened – I, along with many of my long tenured colleagues were let go. Honestly, I was devastated. Around the same time, my dad had just passed away. He lived a full life but had a terminal illness. After a fall at home, he landed in the hospital for 6 weeks, never being able to physically recover. The doctors summoned the family to the hospital and advised us that they were not sure whether my dad would live another month or another 3 years? What they were sure about was that he could no longer stay in the hospital and would have to be moved. My dad wanted to go home. However, moving him home and having 24 hr care for him would have cost about $10K/mth. My folks did not have any kind of insurance plan in place to cover such an expense, so any costs would come out of their retirement funds. We were faced with the tough decision to move my dad to a provincially run long term care facility. Unfortunately, my dad passed away three weeks later. I am certain he would have lived longer had he been staying elsewhere. After some time off, I made the decision last year that I wanted to help people plan for the future. I don’t want anyone to be faced with having to make the tough decisions that we had to. So, I have partnered up with Freedom 55 and now help professionals and their families build and preserve their wealth, so that they can retire when they choose to, the way they want to, in a tax efficient manner. If you have been thinking about working with an Advisor or simply want an idea of how you could benefit, let’s start with a ‘no-obligation, no cost’ chat over a cup of coffee.
