Proprietor, Smullin Associates, Employment Law Attorneys to Management, 1982-88, sabbatical, 1990 to 2000; a small firm which represented employers primarily in employment matters including sexual harassment, wrongful termination, wage-hour issues, union avoidance, various forms of discrimination such as age, sex, race, religion, national origin, protected concerted activity, NLRA, and Title VII, among others. Clients included national high tech, real estate and retail firms as well as regional newspaper and advertising companies, school districts, hospitals and churches. Smullin also taught numerous seminars on these subjects for various companies, cities and trade associations. Smullin also authored "Employer Techniques to Avoid Liability in Wrongful Discharge Litigation" for the book Handling Wrongful Discharge Litigation, California Continuing Education of the Bar, 1984 and the books Basics of Wrongful Employment Termination and Trying a Wrongful Termination Lawsuit, California Continuing Education of the Bar, 1986.In addition to being a member of the Labor and Employment Law section of the American Bar Association, Smullin, at the request of the California Continuing Education of the Bar, assisted that organization in planning its first state-wide program for lawyers on wrongful termination litigation and appeared at its request in 1984, 1986 and 1988 in those programs.
