As Sr. Director for Continuous Improvement I implemented a formal continuous improvement program that resulted in dramatic bottom-line results. We were able to hold operations spending level while increasing output more than 25% each year during my career at St. Jude. This was accomplished through the comprehensive application of lean principles throughout the organization.

MSL was a Tier 1 contract electronic manufacturer and supplier to several large companies such as GE Medical Systems, Honeywell Avionics, and ADC Telecommunications. We implemented lean changes and organized our operation into customer-focused factories. This resulted in shorter lead times, lower inventory levels, less reliance on test / inspection and reduced costs. GE recognized our quality efforts with a six sigma award.

The Nashville operation was a self-directed team environment that quickly understood and implemented lean principles during my tenure. We streamlined our processes and slashed lead times by 75% - reducing inventory levels, improving product quality, and increasing customer satisfaction to record levels. Our accomplishments resulted in recognition as a finalist for America's Best Plant Award from Industry Week magazine.

As a Focused Factory Manager I was able to couple my lean expertise with the implementation methodology of kaizen and achieve dramatic operational improvements. Worked with the Kaizen Institute on first Donaldson Kaizen Blitz in 1992. Implemented ISO 9000 and QS 9000 quality systems - achieved certification in 1995.

During my career at Tennant I had the opportunity to support Phil Crosby as he helped our organization create a culture of continuous improvement through his Zero Defects quality philosophy. I also worked directly with Dr. Richard Schonberger on our early JIT projects. His book on World Class Manufacturing summarizes several of these early efforts and includes photos.
