In 2011, I was captivated by the emerging technology of podcasting, but could not find a podcast that featured outstanding content for everyday leaders, was aired weekly, and had great audio quality.I had some extra time on my hands (this was before we had kids) and decided to create the show I couldn't seem to find. Coaching for Leaders was born. Since 2011, I've had the privilege of personally interviewing many of the leadership experts I've followed for years, including:David Allen, Dan Ariely, Jurgen Appelo, Susan Cain, Dorie Clark, Sydney Finkelstein, Bill George, Marshall Goldsmith, Mark Goulston, Adam Grant, Lynda Gratton, Chris Hadfield , Michael Hyatt, Dacher Keltner, John Kotter, Patrick Lencioni, Cal Newport, Michael Port, Tim Sanders, Simon Sinek, and Michael Bungay Stanier.Many professional development and career podcasts are intended to be helpful for a short period of time on a specific skill set. Coaching for Leaders is rather a long-term, ongoing development program, covering almost every topic that a leader could be expected to navigate in their career.

I was finishing my masters degree in 2004 when a friend mentioned he was taking a Dale Carnegie course. He thought I might be a good fit for the company. Working with Carnegie was a tremendous opportunity that has honed my business, leadership, coaching, sales, and training skills in ways I could never have anticipated.Over my 15 years with Carnegie, I led the account team for one of Dale Carnegie's top corporate customers in North America, received multiple international business performance awards from Dale Carnegie & Associates, and facilitated thousands of hours of corporate training and coaching.The growth of Coaching for Leaders led me to start turning down opportunities at Carnegie, and ultimately to step aside entirely in 2019. I still recommend Carnegie courses often to clients and regularly connect with Carnegie friends who consistently inspire me.

I taught a number of courses at Vanguard over a decade including business communication, leading training programs, organizational change, and developing online learning. My wife, Bonni Stachowiak, is a full professor of business at Vanguard.Most recently, I instructed several courses in the Masters of Science in Nursing program, helping senior nursing leaders to develop their leadership, training, and technology skills.The growing Coaching for Leaders Academy and success of the podcast necessitated the difficult decision to step away from teaching back in 2015.

I started a coaching business in 2002, believing that three years of management and a lot of positive energy would be enough experience to coach people successfully.I was wrong. Things went OK for a bit, but I didn't have the full experience I needed to be a successful coach.Failing at this ultimately led me to Dale Carnegie and thousands of hours coaching, training, and facilitating, plus many years of night classes in graduate school.Crashing and burning at this was the best thing that ever happened in my career.

Most of my college friends went to work for big accounting firms and banks in Chicago after graduation. I wanted to do something uniquely challenging to start my career.I came across SCORE! Educational Centers, a division of Kaplan and the Washington Post Company, and was instantly impressed. They were hiring graduates from the top universities around the country to manage after-school education centers. The job promised tons of business leadership opportunities with daily opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of children. I made it my mission to land the job.SCORE! delivered in every way. Within two years, I had P&L responsibility for a quarter million dollar business. I learned how to hire and develop great high school and college students to coach and tutor children. I learned the foundational skills for success in sales. I discovered how to take great care of customers -- and partner with local schools and parent-teacher associations.Most importantly, I got to participate in the daily joy of helping children enhance their math and reading skills -- an experience that still supports me today as a parent myself.I made many mistakes too. I was passed up for a few promotions when I didn't move on things quickly enough. I learned the value of tough feedback, balancing performance, and great service to customers. From SCORE!, I learned the critical skill of taking initiative in leadership.After three years, I'd turned around a struggling center and it was time to start my own venture. It was a bittersweet day when I left the company -- as it was when years later when I learned that SCORE!'s business model did not scale and they closed the doors on all their locations.
