Dave currently holds positions at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, and also works as a consultant. Dave has an international reputation in adult and youth literacy, numeracy and maths teaching & learning, with a focus on developing conceptual frameworks and assessments, professional development, and writing curriculum and teaching materials. Dave has over 50 years’ experience working in schools, TAFEs, ACE, universities, national bodies and industry. Areas of expertise include:• Professional development & training. Dave has trained teachers and presented across a wide range of topics at a local, regional, state, national and international level, including in Canada, Fiji, India, Indonesia, NZ, Pakistan, Spain, Sweden, US and UK. The focus of much of this work has been about supporting and enhancing the learning of mathematics for all students, especially those disengaged from mathematics. He has a long history of developing and running hands-on, practical numeracy PD programs and workshops.• Assessment. Dave was a member of the original team responsible for the first international adult numeracy assessment, the ALL survey, and the follow up Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) for the OECD. He is currently the Chair of the Numeracy Expert Group for the 2nd cycle of PIAAC. Dave has been involved in developing LLN assessments for youth/adults for a range of clients, including the NZ and Australian governments and for the OECD through both PIAAC & PISA.• Curriculum. Dave is one of the authors of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), and has written maths & numeracy curriculum and teaching materials including for Victorian qualifications such as the CGEA, the VCE, VCAL, and its replacements, VCE Vocational Major and the Victorian Pathways Certificate• Teaching materials.
