KODJ-FM/Oldies 93 was faced with a formidable and well-branded competitor in LA - KRTH-FM - and as the battle between these two radio stations waged, research revealed that two stations were comparable in audience size. Even a call letter change to KCBS-FM and a branding campaign as "CBS-FM" was not sufficient to overpower its main competitor. The Arbitron rating service at the time was much more effective at measuring brand power and KRTH maintained a lead over KCBS-FM/Oldies 93.So it was, in the early days of 1993 that Dave & Tommy sat down and discussed options and created a new opportunity to transition KCBS-FM to a station targeted to a younger generation of oldies fans. Thus was the birth of ARROW 93, the country's first classic hits/80s-focused hit music station.Bolstered by the support of CBS corporate, the team of Van Dyke & Edwards proceeded through six months of research and preparation hidden behind a veil of secrecy. And with the power of a significant TV advertising budget, ARROW 93/KCBS-FM was launched on September 10, 1993 blowing a hole in the Los Angeles market. The station improved in its first rating book released in January 1994 from #21 with Adults 25-54 to #3.The station maintained its ratings and revenue dominance for over a decade in the Los Angeles market.
