In this combined role, Davey was responsible for working with rail customers in the western US and Canada to assess their needs and recommend the best set of solutions. He applied his specialized knowledge of Friction Management and wheel/rail interface contact mechanics to help customers reduce wheel & rail wear, mitigate noise, and improve fuel economy. Davey was also responsible for leading the development of mobile train-mounted friction control application systems, helping customers safely and effectively reduce fuel consumption and track degrading forces in the freight rail applications.

As Engineering Project Supervisor, Davey was responsible for supervising a small team of engineering students and managing the research & development project portfolio using the stage-gate process. Davey's seminal project was delivering the first fleet of mobile train-mounted friction control application systems to the freight market and was responsible for design, development, testing, installation, commissioning, and maintenance.

Davey's direct responsibilities included developing control software using Programmable Logic Controllers and the specification & integration of sensor and actuator components into autonomous train-mounted friction control application systems. His extended responsibilities include mechanical design and technical project management.

In his final engineering co-op position, Davey worked at Honeywell Process Solutions to develop software for a paper machine simulator in C# and model paper machine disturbances using MATLAB. The simulator software successfully launched in June 2008 and the disturbance modeling was used in Honeywell’s model predictive paper machine control software.

Over two four-month engineering co-op terms, Davey was responsible for programming and documenting a trajectory planner for a six degree of freedom robotic arm using MATLAB and Simulink. This tool was used to conduct research into Human-Robot Interaction (HRI).

In his first engineering co-op position, Davey investigated and modeled Thermo-Mechanical Pulping (TMP) variables using PFDs and Mass Balances to understand their effect on the quality of the newsprint being manufactured. He used this information to collaborate with Plant Operators and Engineers to understand issues affecting newsprint quality and to modify plant designs and processes to create a higher quality product.
