I’ve held numerous roles with Grainger, the world’s largest industrial supplier. I was selected for the District Sales Manager, Manufacturing role to turn around an underperforming team. My district includes some of the company’s most complex manufacturing accounts, such as Caterpillar, ADM, Kraft Foods, Nestle, and Monsanto. The district I inherited had not consistently achieved sales plan over a five year period. By implementing a structured sales management process, we were able to finish #5 in sales and win the Annual Achievers award, which is given to the top 8% of sales performers. Our revenues increase 16.7% in 2014 and we finished the year in the Top 10 in the commercial segment—largely as a result of expanding our highest revenue-potential accounts by 50%. One of the biggest challenges I faced in this role came when Caterpillar laid off a third of its work force in 2016. As CAT represented 35% of my district’s sales, I knew I had to get creative. I designed a selling plan that focused on building new corporate relationships, maximized our use of technology, streamlined the procurement process, and developed energy savings programs to make up for lost revenue. By leading efforts to install 140 on-site inventory management systems including vending machines, we were able to provide customers with detailed inventory management data and significantly increase Grainger’s restock rates. In an effort to provide optimal customer service for each account and retain my top performers, I restructured the district to right-size each seller’s book of business.

We won and implemented the contract with all 16 universities. Another huge win in this role was establishing an onsite presence at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
