About David A. Drew, Ph.D.

Ph.D. in Biomedical Science with an established commitment to innovative research, a diverse leadership background, and extensive experience in managing a visionary portfolio of industry, academic, government and non-profit funded multidisciplinary projects. **2023 & 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher**My results-driven research program is focused on the application of precision medicine approaches which integrate multi-omic (metabolomics, proteomics, host genomics/transcriptomics, microbiome, single-cell approaches) profiling of human specimens and patient-derived, translational experimental models to determine underlying mechanisms of disease and health. My basic science doctoral training was enhanced with post-doctoral training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical/translational research. Over the past decade+ at MGH, I have been responsible for identifying and executing multiple strategic academic and industry alliances to rapidly advance our research in precision nutrition, advanced molecular imaging, and prevention/interception of gastrointestinal cancers leading to a diverse portfolio of clinical and translational projects housed within my patient-focused research program.I am a member of several high-functioning, international team science initiatives (Stand Up to Cancer Gastric Cancer Interception Team, Stand Up to Cancer Colorectal Cancer Health Equity Dream Team, Cancer Grand Challenges Team Prospect, All of Us Nutrition for Precision Health Initiative) bringing together industry (Zoe Global Ltd; Lumicell, Inc; Intus Biosceinces; Exact Sciences), government (National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), non-profit (Stand Up to Cancer, American Association for Cancer Research, Cancer Research UK) and academic/medical center (Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, City of Hope, Columbia University, Samsung Medical Center [Korea]) partners.

My dissertation focused on the potential role of human aberrant crypt foci, the earliest precancerous lesions of the colon, as surrogate markers of cancer risk. The diminutive nature of these lesions has necessitated the use and innovation of novel approaches to address hypotheses centered on cancer initiation (see publications). This work has direct clinical significance and the results have provided new measures for personalized colon cancer risk assessments. As the project lead (P.I.: D.W. Rosenberg), I was responsible for directing and performing the bulk of the laboratory work. Additionally, I was tasked with leading and coordinating the clinical study. As such I managed the day-to-day operation of a large team of administrators, regulatory personnel, clinicians, and research staff to meet our research goals. Since taking over as the project lead, patient accruals and productivity increased two-fold, resulting in a ten year high in annual procedures. In addition, during this time, state and federal grants were secured to ensure the long-term success of the research study.
  • Lambdavision, Inc.
    Research Analyst Intern
    Lambdavision, Inc. Dec 2013 - Jun 2014
    Farmington, Ct
Served as a part-time analyst, drawing on my experiences as a researcher and consultant, to provide regulatory assistance and clinical trial strategic planning in order to secure initial venture capital investments.
  • Connecticut Center For Entrepreneurship And Innovation
    Research Analyst
Connecticut Center For Entrepreneurship And Innovation Jan 2013 - May 2013
    East Hartford, Connecticut
As a Research Analyst, I was a leading member of a multi-disciplinary, advanced degree team to form a business plan and deliver results directly to a new biotechnology joint venture. My role specifically focused on identifying barriers to entry associated with foreign and domestic regulatory policies, developing strategies to effectively navigate these regulatory pathways, innovating alternative applications of the patented device to expand their intellectual property portfolio, and designing efficient clinical trial pipelines. As a unit, the team produced a comprehensive analysis of all potential markets, projecting over $40 million in annual revenue by year five.
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
    Graduate Assistant
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute May 2009 - May 2010
    Troy, New York
Responsible for two assay development research projects while serving as a teaching assistant. The first project focused on establishing high-throughput compliment assays to screen candidate drug compounds for cellular toxicity and their metabolized byproducts (using MALDI-TOF). The second aimed to develop an in vitro biochemical assay to measure matrix metalloproteinase protein-signaling interactions important in wound healing and a potential role in cancer metastasis. Both assays are still currently in use by these laboratories. Following the selection of my dissertation research laboratory and advisor, my advisor decided to depart Rensselaer for another academic institution. However, I identified that translational research was what I was most passionate about and Rensselaer did not offer replacement opportunities particular to my field of interest. As a result, I transferred to the UConn Health Center to continue my doctoral studies.
  • Cornell University
    Summer Research Intern
    Cornell University Jun 2004 - Aug 2006
    Ithaca, New York
By studying natural variation of the rice genus Oryza, these projects aimed to determine quantitative trait loci (QTL) in Oryza species to enhance the performance of modern, high-yielding rice cultivars in order to grow rice in harsh climate conditions primarily located in developing countries.
