Profile bio

About David Adelson

My scientific training and expertise is in the neural control of the abdominal viscera. My particular focus as a research scientist was the electrophysiology of the vagus and splanchnic nerves. I have over twenty years experience in the field, during which time I developed a number of novel experimental approaches, software tools, and analytical methods that led to unique insights about the neural coordination of visceral function. Through that work, I came to appreciate how much of what is important in the pattern of physiological coordination is obscured by the way we aggregate data.My scientific work ultimately led me to the view that the Western biomedical framework for understanding nervous control of physiological function was inadequate, and I became interested in the physiological insights of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I gained an appreciation for TCM's approach to the nature of health and well-being. TCM concepts of the continuous interrelationship of organ functions had a great impact on my thinking about physiological coordination. I was also impressed that TCM had an elaborate and systematic practice based on relationships between somatic stimulation and visceral response, while in Western biomedical theory these have, since Langely's original description of the Autonomic Nervous System, been treated as largely unrelated.Recognizing the potential for mobile health monitoring combined with advanced data analytical methods to revolutionize the understanding of biology, and particularly the nature of well-being, in late 2013 I founded Ebullient Technologies, LLC, a company devoted to building tools to help those with insight about health and well-being explore those insights and promote the health of themselves and others.Specialties: Software development, neurogastroenterology, electrophysiology, autonomic neuroscience, "stress" biology, mind-body physiology.

Listed skills include Research, Neuroscience, Science, Electrophysiology, and 16 others.

Annually we produce a large beach ultimate tournament, LA Throwback, in January in Santa Monica, that attracts teams from around North America and beyond. We use the proceeds from this event to donate to local area teams that help us produce the event, as well as an Ultimate Community Support Fund to fund great ideas from members of the local community to help grow the sport. Additionally, we produce free beach ultimate events (e.g. "hat tournaments") for the local community throughout the year. Our maiden voyage was in January 2018 under the fiscal sponsorship of the American Beach Ultimate Association (ABUA), and we incorporated as a CA public benefit corporation in Aug. 2018 to carry our work forward.

The Norman Cousins Program in Psychoneuroimmunology was an NIH-funded interdisciplinary program within the UCLA School of Medicine for post-doctoral trainees. Led by the late Dr. Herbert Weiner, the program took a broad approach to exploring the interplay between physiology, psychology, neuroscience, and immunology. A particular focus of the program was a critical examination and re-evaluation of the modern concept of stress, as originally put forth by Dr. Hans Selye,. This critique placed an emphasis on the problems associated with merging widely divergent physological states and stimuli within a single term and concept, i.e. stress.

Developed a suite of software programs (written in C) - the WAVEFORM package - to acquire and analyze neurophysiological data, including hardware interface and on- and off-line analytical routines. Many of the features of the WAVEFORM system were subsequently incorporated (with permission) into the Spike2 acquisition and analysis system of Cambridge Electronic Devices (CED, Ltd).
