About David Akers

David has been working with students & mentoring staff for 40 years. Following a productive career studying and working at universities in Australia and Canada - Professor Ian Chubb AC said he “was the best Executive Officer I had in my time as Vice-Chancellor of ANU” - and seven years in Executive roles with the Australian Government, David now shares his leadership skills and experience with a wider audience under the Blackwood Strategy Services Pty Ltd banner, with his parent company based in North Brisbane. His consulting work is focused on the following areas: 1. International and domestic student recruitment;2. Property development and student accommodation; 3. Government & industry/business grants; 4. Strategic plan formulation and review; and 5. Executive/management coaching and development.David is also Chairman of Blackwood Student Services (BSS) - A Joint Venture (JV) Group, which is delivering a community-based, high quality and low cost student accommodation model, anchored in the outer suburban neighbourhoods of North Brisbane, of dorm-style living in a learning community where the student experience is paramount. Centred on Queensland's newest university at the USC-Moreton Bay Campus next to the Petrie train station, the BSS/JV Group is building a student residential lodge platform as a strategic springboard to licence and project manage the development of ‘Blackwood Student Tower Villages,’ within the next five years in areas pre-zoned by the Moreton Bay Regional Council for high-rise mixed-use construction, in partnership with local investors, with the goal to help a region historically deprived of tertiary education opportunities with affordable housing options for the 10,000 students coming to the Gateway to the Sunshine Coast in the next decade.
