David's colourful career began first as an actor in 1958 and then as a television director in 1966. He worked, almost continuously and mainly in the television Industry, for nearly 60 years. He's seen colossal changes, not only in structure and management of the medium but in the dramatic developments that happen almost daily in its technology. Some changes are very much for the better - others, not so. The greater ease of use and mobility that came with the increasing miniaturisation and digitisation of equipment and lighting have opened the industry up. Movie/tv making is astonishingly fast now compared with that of the early days. Sadly, much of its "mystique" has been lost on the way. Many old skills and specialist knowledge have gone - though myriad new ones have emerged. Unfortunately the authority of directors and producers has been diluted, often leaving them vulnerable to the occasional egocentric hustler and other non-creative and non-expert forces. Quite a hard price to pay for the upsurge in greater freedom and far greater opportunities for real, vibrant creativity.
