Profile bio

About David Andrews

David's colourful career began first as an actor in 1958 and then as a television director in 1966. He worked, almost continuously and mainly in the television Industry, for nearly 60 years. He's seen colossal changes, not only in structure and management of the medium but in the dramatic developments that happen almost daily in its technology. Some changes are very much for the better - others, not so. The greater ease of use and mobility that came with the increasing miniaturisation and digitisation of equipment and lighting have opened the industry up. Movie/tv making is astonishingly fast now compared with that of the early days. Sadly, much of its "mystique" has been lost on the way. Many old skills and specialist knowledge have gone - though myriad new ones have emerged. Unfortunately the authority of directors and producers has been diluted, often leaving them vulnerable to the occasional egocentric hustler and other non-creative and non-expert forces. Quite a hard price to pay for the upsurge in greater freedom and far greater opportunities for real, vibrant creativity.

David trained as a drama director with BBC TV under their Head of Drama, Sidney Newman and was the first to suggest improvisation as a means to create TV drama, defined in a memo to Hugh Wheldon, Managing Director of BBC TV, in 1964. Exploiting his vast acting experience, David went on to direct hundreds of tv plays, serials and series episodes for the BBC and the ITV companies in a career spanning 40 years. In addition to his TV drama work David was a producer for the Ministry of Defence, making cinema and tv films, commercials and documentaries for the Armed Forces - with the putative rank of Lt. Colonel! He moved to the staff of Scottish Television plc in Glasgow as a Senior Producer/Director, making network drama as well as magazine, music, education, news and current affairs programmes12 years later in 1990 he was made redundant under the Thatcher rules. With the help of London talent agent Roger Carey, David rebuilt his freelance career, directing continuously for the ITV companies and the BBC until 1996, when he joined Mersey TV as Senior Director and Depute Producer, adding a vast number of episodes of “Hollyoaks”, “Grange Hill” and “Brookside” to his name, When Phil Redmond sold the company and new management came in, David decided not to remain there. David delivered some lectures and conducted video drama workshops at James Watt College in Paisley, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow and Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, passing on his experience and skill to youngsters hoping to forge careers in the industry. In 2006 he hung up his director's viewfinder, and sought new artistic challenges in acting, music and screenwriting.
