The Royal Navy Police officer provides an extensive range of policing and investigative services to the Royal Navy both domestically and internationally. This includes operational detention in the maritime environment and the analysis and exploitation of evidence at sea, as well as first response duties, community policing and crime prevention in the main naval port areas in the UK and several overseas locations.The nature of the role demands that officers exhibit both versatility and adaptability, as they are often required to work in a fast-paced environment and may be deployed to multi-roled units across the globe. This could entail conducting community policing one day, investigating a serious crime the next, and then conducting counter-piracy or counter-narcotics operations on a warship in the Caribbean or Gulf of Arabia.They work in close partnership with other police forces and agencies, contributing significantly to the national and international intelligence framework.

A core specialization of the Royal Navy, the Seaman Specialist Branch primary role is to man the ship for all primary seamanship evolutions. Entering and exiting port, replenishing at sea (stores, fuel and ammunition), taking the ship to anchor or towing of other vessels. The Seaman Specialists steer the ship, act as lookout and communicate with other vessels and aircraft by means of tactical communications, VHF and UHF equipment. Operate smaller defensive weaponry such as the General Purpose Machine gun and small arms. Coxswain Ridged Hull Inflatable Boats, such as the Pacific 22/ 24 and Rigid Raider.
