I kept it up to date with current best practices. I wrote it to be optimal for sites where the content doesn't need to change much over time, like the online version of a book. It used MySQL as its batabase backend, handled page caching In my time there, I transitioned several sites from Perl CGI to use this framework, and launched many new sites with it. As time went on, I migrated several sites to Fat Free Framework (F3), a lightweight PHP OOP MVC framework, so I could benefit from many eyeballs on the backend code. For sites that required more features out of the box, I turned to WordPress. I developed many sites with custom themes and plugins, and worked to keep them up to date with current WordPress best practices. I established policies at the Institute to aid in SEO: make it so all content was served as words, not images of words; use semantic HTML markup to indicate structure and emphasis where necessary; draw out guidelines for minimal duplication of content and to keep links between our sites at an informative level so we'd stay on good terms with Google's policies.A major project I worked on early at the Institute was to push through a style refresh of the main website, at aynrand.org. I had to work under severe technology restraints, as the site was hosted with a vendor that required we serve the site to trigger Quirks Mode. For all the sites that I was in charge of, I kept the frontend fresh with the newest CSS, JS and HTML5 techniques that had broad browser support. I made it a priority for all sites to validate and load quickly. I developed a CDN that makes use of Amazon services, through their AWS platform. Static assets would be synchronized to S3 and served through the CloudFront service. -

Actuarial AnalystCheiron Dec 2003 - Dec 2006Mclean, Virginia, UsI supported the company's actuaries in employee & retiree benefit plan valuations. I used specialist software packages, such as LynchVal and ProVal to produce actuarial valuations of pension plan costs. I used Microsoft Access & Excel to data mine, reconcile and format pension and health plan population data for use in these valuation packages. I wrote reports of these actuarial valuations and prepared PowerPoint slides for presentations based on them. I wrote SQL queries and programs in Perl to extract health insurance plan costs from claims data. I served as a peer reviewer and fact checker of my colleagues' work, to ensure all our calculations were made on a sound actuarial and factual basis.
