David is a true teaching scholar and has focused his career on the principle academic missions of research, teaching, and public service. David’s concern over students that struggled with introductory computer science classes led him to adapt his research knowledge to the classroom. By adapting his research “software engine”, he developed an application where students could practice writing software programs. This was revolutionary. While math students could practice (and increase learning) by solving additional problems and looking up answer in the back of the book, there was no such “drill” for computer science. David’s drill application for computer science students attracted funding from the National Science Foundation which fostered the development of Turing’s Craft. His research led to improved learning in the classroom and the formation of a start-up company created a public service as economic development."
