About David Barber

I am an Academic developer with specialisms in learning technology, curriculum development and classroom pedagogy. Although I work in UK, Higher Education I have a wider interest in learning and education across a range of different settings and contexts. For example, I have published about the role of technology in primary education and have worked as a subject tutor in both primary and secondary schools. I am also interested in the impact of education globally: a personal focus that first emerged while helping to lead field placements to Gambia and has grown through work relating to the development of international programmes and partnerships. I also retain a strong interest in my original research field, the history and religion of the ancient world, and have delivered on a number of related projects relating to digitisation, digital collections and heritage studies.

I provide leadership for the TEL team and wider activities across the Learning and Teaching Development unit. I oversee services in training, development and system administration and am programme leader for the MA Student Engagement and head of the university's systems for professional recognition. I am responsible for developing and implementing TEL targets in line with the University's Education and Student Experience Strategy and head up institutional initiatives designed to enhance learning and drive improvement of performance metrics aligned to our regulatory conditions of registration. Over the last year I have coordinated a range of training and support services designed to support online teaching and led two institution wide projects that promote consistency in the presentation and promotion or digital learning resources.
  • Southampton Solent University
    Senior Academic Developer
Southampton Solent University Aug 2015 - Dec 2019
    Southampton, Hampshire, Gb
Located in the Solent Learning and Teaching Institute (SLTI) I work to promote the development, evaluation and the dissemination of innovation and good practice in learning and teaching. Working closely with the Director, Heads of School and academic colleagues, I support major institution wide projects and contribute to professional development activities in the form of training, workshops and related events. Current initiatives include a learning environment project - which will facilitate the effective use of the flexible learning and teaching spaces in a newly constructed academic teaching building - and a National Student Survey (NSS) intervention programme - which explores how institutions can support courses in understanding and responding to NSS results. Between 2017 and 2019 I was course Leader for the PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching and led the revalidation. In doing so I succeeded in having that programme approved as part of a new apprenticeship scheme aligned to the Academic Professional Degree Apprenticeship standard.
  • Southampton Solent University
    Curiculum Learning And Teaching Developer
Southampton Solent University Nov 2012 - Aug 2015
    Southampton, Hampshire, Gb
Supporting the development of Teaching Learning and Assessment, this role was focused on promoting innovation in the curriculum and its delivery. I worked in a faculty that offered a wide portfolio of STEM programmes. Key initiatives within which I had a leadership role included a faculty wide revalidation, an HEA supported initiative into 'empowering students with group work assessment', the development of a distance learning course to support international cohorts of mariners seeking the MCA Chief Engineers' qualification and MOOC development. Cutting across all of these was a focus on assessment, exploring the relevance of the HEA's Marked Improvement Report (ASKe) to individual practice, course level assessment strategies and Faculty Management processes.
  • Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln
    Head Of E-Learning
Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln Apr 2004 - Nov 2012
    Lincoln, Lincolnshire, Gb
My first task in this post was to create an infrastructure for e-learning that included the introduction of a VLE, related web based services and classroom technologies. Building on this I developed a range of training and support services and led numerous, externally funded projects - including a Change Academy delegation and a major University Modernisation Fund grant - which ensured that learning technologies were fully integrated into the staff and student experience. Through successive promotions, to Lecturer in e-Learning to Head of e-learning, my role became increasingly strategic and the focus shifted to the development of relevant pedagogies and innovative approaches to curriculum and course development. This paved the way for a move into the broader realm of Academic Development.
