David Barton has collaborated with Professors Kulkarni and Fitzgerald over a number of years and has joined the Monash Alfred Psychiatric Research Centre (MAPrC) as of June 2014. Current research projects include:1. investigation of the efficacy and safety of Magnetic Stimulation Treatment 2. investigation of the safety and efficacy of SERM in males with treatment resistant schizophrenia3. Transdermal Magnetic Stimulation in treatment of adolescents 4. Combination therapy for treatment resistant depression

Professor Barton provides clinical supervision and exam preparation for the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for approximately 10 overseas trained psychiatrists employed by the service. He also provides second opinions as well as Quality Improvement Activities for the mental health service.

Professor Barton undertakes clinical research in collaboration with a cardiologist (Professor Murray Esler), a neurophysiologist (Professor Gavin Lambert) a renal physician (Professor Markus Schlaich) and other lab members into the neurophysiology of major depression and panic disorder, how these diseases effect the Cardiovascular system and their response to antidepressant and Cognitive Behavioural Treatments. The major findings from this research are:1. The bimodal nature of sympathetic nervous system activity in major depression and its relationship to comorbid panic disorder.2. Elevated cerebral serotonin turnover in both major depression and panic disorder and that serotonin turnover returns to normal with treatment with an SSRI.3. The diminished levels of brain leptin release in untreated major depression.4. An association between low internal jugular levels of a neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and level of suicide risk in depressed patients.

Since 2010 as Deputy Chair and 2012 as Chair.This is a subcommittee of the Mental Health Information Strategy subcommittee of the Mental Health Standing Committee of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council. As Deputy Chair, Professor Barton also sits on the Mental Health Information Strategy subcommittee.The major purpose of this Committee is to provide expert advice regarding: 1. The implementation of routine outcome measurement in Aged Person Mental Health Services.2. Advice regarding training service and workforce issues.3. Analysis and reporting of the National Outcomes and Casemix Collection data as part of the overall aim of the National Mental Health to improve the quality of care provided to people with mental illness.
