After 50 years as a psychiatrist including remote area psychiatry (Outback Australia) and counseling survivors of torture, I believe that we have gone down the wrong path,basing our understanding on a focus on human culture while totally neglecting that of the wider planet earth, this earth which is home to humans,to all life,to the biosphere,to the atmosphere, to the oceans and rivers. We steer our course to a fantasied future by gazing into the rear view mirror of the past, into a now dead world.For psychiatry to wake up it must radically expand human awareness to a dynamic understanding of the fraught state of the biosphere . Psychiatry has narrowed its concerns to some aspects of human life. What about the environment? What about unchecked human population growth? What about the carers,the mothers? Much of our contemporary human understanding is based on an archaic view of life and of the biosphere.The current catch cry is for more progress, full speed ahead!
