With the bulk of my public policy career spent as a specialist in environmental and rural affairs, I was delighted to join one of the country's most professional and respected membership organisations. My role focuses on interfacing with policymakers in Westminster and around the country to raise the profile of issues of importance to rural communities. So far I've led campaigns on mental health and online abuse, helped develop a Private Member's Bill tackling rural crime, briefed parliamentarians, organised political events in Parliament and at party conferences, produced content hosted on our website and in wider media to engage our members and the public, and represented the Alliance in press, radio and television interviews.

The Policy Research Unit (PRU) is a team of specialist researchers and communicators dedicated to getting subscribers the information they need in a format they can use. Based in the Palace of Westminster, it works exclusively for Conservative MPs, MEPs and Peers, providing advice, briefings and correspondence on all aspects of Government policy in writing, on the telephone and in person, liaising closely with Government departments and Special Advisers.In my final role I retained the responsibilities of Programme Manager as set out below, but was mandated also to apply a similar focus on building colleagues' capacity, helping them identify and implement process efficiencies on our growing IT team. I subsequently came to head that team, becoming responsible for its strategic direction as well as the day-to-day oversight of four colleagues, and managing relations with suppliers and customers. I also managed the establishment of its new website that serves as the primary means of delivering products to its customers.

As Project Manager back in 2014-15 I introduced project management, as a concept, to the organisation, but my role at that time was to serve as the manager of any projects going; in this position it became about building capacity throughout the whole team, as mentor, consultant and guide, to enable colleagues to manage business projects for themselves. In addition to the critical website and Cross Reference strategy projects, I consulted on projects related to data protection, raising team statistical capacity and reformulating one of our key products, and sponsored projects on cyber security and team induction and training.

As Customer Relationship Manager, a role I assumed following the conclusion of my maternity cover contract as Deputy Director, I became responsible for managing all aspects of our relationship with Members of Parliament in their capacity of subscribers to our services. The surprise General Election left one of my main challenges as to co-ordinate our contact with candidates, looking to secure the custom of those who were elected. We subsequently achieved a record 100% subscription rate among the new intake. Meanwhile I also developed the PRU's first comprehensive, documented IT strategy.

As Deputy Director I helped run the Policy Research Unit, giving final approval to our research output as well as directly managing human resources and looking after our IT arm. I procured and managed an occupational health service, ran two recruitment rounds for full-time employees, oversaw several others for interns and introduced apprenticeships to the organisation.

As the PRU's first Project Manager, in addition to existing duties I created and implemented a bespoke methodology for project management. I agreed project plans and led teams of colleagues in implementing initiatives aimed at providing subscribing MPs with a better and more efficient service. Separately I took on responsibility for selling and supporting software services to MPs' offices, generating direct-sale revenue worth £14,000 p.a.

Initially heading the PRU's Cross-Departmental Issues desk I moved to take charge for us of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, retaining that role through later promotions. I also took on the Scotland Office and the Department for Energy and Climate Change.At first I was sub-contracted for half my time to provide research and advisory assistance in the office of a senior Cabinet Minister as a maternity cover, staying on by request to work on more complex projects. Other projects in this role included managing a complete overhaul of the PRU's brand identity and playing an advisory role in the creation of its previous website.

Overseeing a range of marketing and HR initiatives, taking the lead in creating and implementing a new cross-corporate employer brand. I also managed a major graduate recruitment campaign based on a national competition, and established and managed a new undergraduate placement programme, which became the first to be provisionally accredited under the National Council for Work Experience Quality Mark. I also wrote four shortlisted nominations for industry awards.

Key achievements included designing the annual pharmacist recruitment strategy, workstream leadership in a major change programme and redesigning the business’ approach to policy communication. I also benefited from training across areas including leadership, project management, influencing skills and stakeholder engagement.

This elected sabbatical officer role was especially challenging because the position was created just weeks before I was elected. It saw me take charge of overseeing the UK’s most varied student activities scene. My main focus was on revitalising the role of community volunteering in student life. I created the University's first dedicated volunteers’ fair, introduced a national volunteer award scheme and directed a merger between the Association and the student volunteering body.
