I am an artist, a writer, a teacher, and a specialist in visual storytelling. I offer writing, image-making, and editing services, along with individual writing and art lessons.I also consult on narrative marketing--finding the story that will sell your idea, product, or campaign.Let me help you find and hone your story and skills, whether it be to launch your company, propel your organization, or just grow your own creative practice.For me, the act of writing and the practice of making images have always been commingled. I learned my alphabet at the feet of my grandfather, who was a sign painter in Florida. Under the water oak tree in his back yard, while he hand-lettered a boat or a street sign, he showed me how M’s rise like mountains, the tower of the tree's T, the swooping S in the swan’s neck. I scratched out these lines in the dirt with a stick, drawing something closer to hieroglyphs than letters.Since then, I have continued to combine the written word with visual images, and I consider my creative process to be a hybrid of the two media. I earned an MFA and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Houston, but I have never stopped making pictures. While many writers use visual art as inspiration, and many artists illustrate written works, the artist-writer, who can move fluently back and forth between the two disciplines is a rarer bird. In my experience, working in this vein allows me a strange sort of collaboration, as if the two halves of my brain were working side-by-side, one in love with the beauty and precision language allows us, the other side awash in the flux of images, a world more full of surprise and less-logic bound.
