My role at Moriah College as a teacher of Stage 4 and 5 History extended further my skills in the classroom. In particular, teaching in a coeducational school refined my classroom strategies and technique, in addition to working with academically accelerated students.The contracted time at Moriah also saw me conduct lunchtime Careers sessions in which were discussed university programs, careers destinations and pathways, and HSC subject-selection. By fostering my skills in teaching boy and girl students, and empowering them to make informed right choices about their future, I gained further knowledge on the different academic, pastoral needs of both.

Each boy is encouraged to study subjects in the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC) that will build his academic and personal skills, and prepare him to make a valued contribution in every aspect of his life when he leaves. As a History teacher, my role in the school is to not only educate the students in the content of the History syllabus, but also instil in them a passion for the subject specifically and learning in general. My role as the Careers Counsellor is to help the students narrow their options for further study or employment by being aware of the alternatives available to them, and help them develop the study and personal skills necessary for the next stage of their lives.

My main role as a Recruitment and Promotions Officer was to understand the needs of those students enquiring about UNSW’s programs and to assist them in gaining entry to the University, while recommending alternative-entry pathways for unsuccessful candidates.My skills in customer service and interpersonal communication were augmented by dealing with a wide variety of prospective students, parents, school careers advisers and older students. As a key member of the team that facilitated the outreach activities with schools, tours of the University’s campus and attendance at careers markets throughout the State, I developed substantial people skills, and in event management and supervision that I have used since my time at UNSW.
