Its shareholders are AREVA (51%) and the Kazakhstan company KAZATOMPROM (49%), responsible for supervising national nuclear activity and in particular, the mining of natural uranium.Main offices were located in Almaty but most of the 1200 employees are working on the exploration, production and construction sites, located in the Muyunkum desert, in the South Kazakhstan region (around 250 kilometers North of Shimkent).In 2008, AREVA and KAZATOMPROM agreed to increase KATCO uranium production up to 4000 tonnes per year, from 2012. The "KATCO 4000" project was then officially launched Q4 2008 with the objectives of increasing the overall production capacity and upgrading the existing infrastructures.The first phase of work (called "Fast Track" Project) was successfully completed and delivered in July 2010, after 700 000 manhours done in 9 months including winter time. Construction works for the second phase have started in September 2010, as planned.
