In September 2015 I have worked almost exclusively with Australia's largest gold mining company, Newcrest Mining Limited. Since that time and throughout 2016, we have delivered a truly remarkable safety turnaround which is transforming that business. From a period of utmost difficulty with several workplace fatalities in a short period of time, Newcrest Mining goes from strength to strength.Working alongside senior Newcrest staff, we worked jointly and collaboratively to design and implement a Critical Controls Management programme to drive the necessary improvements. That programme is successfully implemented and is transforming the way work gets done. Senior leaders verify systems and training / competency integrity and front line leaders verify critical controls are effective in the workplace during work when major hazards are evident. Operators and maintainers will ensure all critical controls are in place before any work starts, and will stop work when critical controls start to erode.Whilst this is a programme aimed at driving safety improvements, it is really a programme to increase operational discipline.
