Since 1999 I have been actively involved with community outreach and the improvement of community services, first in Philadelphia, PA, and more recently in Flagstaff, Williams, and Page Arizona. Much of this work has been at a neighborhood level, helping small groups of people improve their communities by gaining more effective access to a wide variety of services. This has included the development of neighborhood associations, block watches, community gardens, community clean-ups, mural creation, and numerous other community service volunteer opportunities for youth and adults. As Program Coordinator for Coconino County Community Services’ Emergency Services Program I supervised staff and did direct case management focusing on utility and rent assistance to individuals and families and helped direct clients to other social service agencies. I continually sought to nurture relationships with other agencies and individuals who could help our clientele. As a strong proponent of Asset Based Community Development principles, the department sought to build on existing resources, and encouraged our clients to build on their existing connections, skills, and resources rather than focusing on their deficits or reliance on others. We continually sought to improve our social work skills and to study the best practices of other agencies. This was particularly challenging as the nature of our work and demand for our services allowed only for short term case management. My wish is to continue working to stabilize, enrich, and empower individuals, families, neighborhoods, and communities. I am a skilled leader but I believe my true strength is in working collaboratively as part of a team, whether that is myself and one individual, or as part of a community network of partnering agencies. I can contribute best in an environment which promotes ongoing learning and innovation and in which all voices are heard, valued and encouraged.
