As a child I always had something nearby that I could use as a tool. Spanners, screwdrivers, hammers, my parents feared them all! It was therefore inevitable that when I gave up any dreams I may have had of being a rock star, I threw myself into a world of engineering and creativity. In 1984, a chance interview with a local firm spawned a working relationship with my good friend Ian Kirkpatrick that lasts to this day. As a young, ambitious man with a world of opportunities ahead of me I became fascinated in how water was being used in new architectural projects. Although this was hardly a new concept (think ancient Moorish and classical Italian architecture), I was staggered at how little reference was made to matching water to new environments for purely aesthetic purposes – fountains and water features from the 1980s are probably best forgotten!I sensed that within the architectural world there was an appetite for water to be expressed more boldly than ever before but a lack of expertise and creativity was stifling any opportunities that emerged. Research, experimentation, intuition, and the flexible study program of the Open University enabled me to learn from experience how water can be manipulated to support architecture and landscape.In 1996, Ian and I created the Fountain Workshop Limited which has since grown into three specialist companies staffed with the finest team imaginable.Collaborating with designers, architects, and clients to realise their aspirations for new and exciting public spaces is an absolute joy. Many of our collaborators have become good friends and the relationship of mutual respect and admiration that bonds us is what drives me to explore new ways of sharing my passion with others.
