Global Lead Development Engineer
I have responsibility for the development and commissioning of the analytical methodologies used during the structural design of Umbilicals. A major project i was involved in was the commissioning of a cable CAD package which allowed designers to design the cable cross section from an object orientated interface, whereby each piece of geometry had associated material properties etc, allowing structural calculations to be performed in real time during the design. This package came with limited calculation capability so i had to develop bolt in tools capable of calculating bending/tension behaviour, stiffnesses etc.Another project i have recently completed is the development of a 3D finite element analysis methodology for crushing of the umbilical cable during installation as a consequence of over-boarding tensions. This methodology involved the use of LS-DYNA explicit FEA, as implicit time stepping is not currently capable of solving the non-linear contact issues that this problem presents. LS-DYNA was driven by the ANSYS interface. Macros were written in the ANSYS APDL programming language to automate the modelling procedure, such that the 3D model could be generated out of the cable CAD software with minimal user input needed for the FEA model generation. This method is now fully developed and implemented and has been compared against test data and found to return very favourable results. A successful consequence of this project was the development of a dynamic impact analysis methodology, again via LS-DYNA. This impact analysis methodology has also been verified against in house testing.I have been responsible for deriving, from first principles, full mathematical derivations of our analytical tools for submission to a 3rd party for independent validation.I am just starting a project to develop our own cable CAD software and thus remove the reliance on the 3rd party software that our tools all currently bolt into.
Engineering Analyst
I was involved in the analysis of sub sea umbilicals from both a static and dynamic perspective, as well as the analysis of associated hardware. During this time i was involved in the development of several calculation methodologies, both analytical and numerical, in relation to design of components. I was also responsible for the development and implimentation of a bespoke finite element analysis method, its verification and development for our needs, i.e. development of post processing capabilities etc. I have also since been involved in a joint industry project (JIP) to help further the development of this finite element solution, as a key member.I am currently the subject matter expert for structural analytical methodologies within Oceaneering Umbilical Solutions and i am very fluent in the application of non linear Finite element analysis. I also have some experience in the use of Orcaflex, for global dynamic analysis.I am currently on secondment to a project to develop and impliment design/analysis software for the efficient design and analysis of umbilical cross sections.
Senior Development Engineer
In this role I deputised for the department manager and was responsible for the technical quality of the output of the development engineering department. I also had to run my own development projects, one of which involved defining and implimenting a novel way of designing components via statistical methods which still allowed compliance with industry standards and provided cost reduction for both Oceaneering and our clients.
Design Engineer
I was responsible for the design of complex microwave antenna mounting structures and radio integrations etc, via SolidWorks. I also had to verify the design integrity via Finite Element Analysis in ANSYS, prior to organising for the manufacture of prototypes. On receipt of the prototypes I had to perform various physical tests, both static and dynamic to ensure the validity of design, after which it would be released into production.
Senior Engineer
Responsible for all engineering activities on light industrial turbines from 2000 - 2003. this involved the development of welding, brazing and heat treatment procedures for super alloy castings, including DX and SX alloys. After which i was the senior development engineer, with developmental responsibility for welding, heat treatment, vacuum brazing, and coating procedures for Wood Group Heavy Industrial Turbines Ltd. During this time i was involved in the development of a single cristal advanced repair formula for the vacuum brazing of single cristal alloys.
