Reporting to the Future Networks and Policy Manager I am re-sponsible for assessing and managing the impact of the mandated UK Smart Metering Programme for Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution.Working with colleagues in SSE and at a national level within the wider smart metering and DNO communites my objectives are:(a) To ensure that the proposed UK smart metering system specification provides the functionality required to support the future operation of smart grids.(b) Understand and minimise the impact of the SM roll out for Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution with particular focus on managing operational issues associated with the roll out programme.(c) Develop an understanding of commercial and regulatory risk associated with the SM programme in order to minimise the impact for SSE's networks businesses.(d) Identify any potential commercial opportunities for Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution arising from the programme.(e) Itentify the impact of smart metering on existing business processes and IT infrastructure. Make recommendations regarding any changes that may be required.(f) Ensure that the issues/ risks/ opportunities associated with Smart Metering are included within the SSEPD RIIO-ED1 business plan.(g) Generally support SSE LCNF project development and more specifically provide advice relating to smart metering.In order to support the above objectives I represent SSE on two Smart Metering Groups at the Energy Networks Association (ENA). I am current chairman of the ENA Smart Metering Steering Group.I represent SSE/ ENA at a national level on the Consumer Engagement and Roll Out Group - Operational Issues (CERG-OI).Additionally I manage all elements relating to MOCOPA for Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution.
Reporting to the R&D Manager I am responsible for the management of a number of Power Systems R&D projects.The main focus of this work is associated with developing smarter grid technology and solutions for deployment on power distribution networks. Working for a vertically integrated company ensures that the projects I manage include both transmission and distribution system developments.The role involves working closely with academia, research organisations and manufacturers / suppliers.I am currently taking a leading role in developing a large “Smart Grid” demonstration project for potential deployment in the south of England in accordance with Ofgem’s Low Carbon Networks (LCN) fund.Additionally I represent SSE Power Distribution at national level for issues relating to Smart Metering. Work to date has included:• helping to define the Benefits of Advanced Smart Metering for Demand Response based Control of Distribution Networks• assisting with the development of Distribution Network Operator functional requirements for the UK Smart Metering System.
National Networks Operations Manager – Responsible to the Head of Operations for the operation, maintenance and installationof all new connections on SSE Power Distribution’s expanding portfolio of Embedded Distribution Networks. Additional responsibilities included the operation and maintenance of a number of private networks managed under contract to SSE Power Distribution. With a national remit and a small but expanding team my focus was to ensure the safe operation of all networks (gas and electricity) under my charge. With a specific focus on customer service my team managed the installation of all new connections on these networks in all areas of the UK
