My focus, whilst heavily academic, is on producing students who will be accepted by, and prepared for university life; consequently I operate an enriched curriculum which includes both IQ and EQ. Students engage in extensive ECAs, creative development programs and each pursues the Duke of Edinburgh Award; a strong emphasis here being holistic character building and enhancing moral values. Last year’s cohort of 17 graduates was offered places in top 20 universities in the UK, USA and Australia, with 2 students being accepted into the top 6 worldwide. I work closely with our board, our holding company, the examination bodies and the Chenghua Education Board and have a staff of around 50. Pivotal to my role is to re-energise our market and brand position, consequently since I have joined, amidst a deeply competitive education market, here in SW China I have more than doubled student numbers on campus. I operate the school within a self-imposed structure of governance that ensures open and transparent communication. I emphasize a triumvirate service where parents, teachers and tutors work together to constantly ensure enhanced learning for my students. In Chengdu I am on the Executive Board of the British Chamber and I am also treasurer for the Rotary Club of Chengdu, and I assist in the organization of (and speak at) the yearly Chengdu Burns supper. I introduced a performance appraisal system for both academic and administrative personnel including job planning, self-evaluation and incremental payment systems along with classroom lecturer evaluations through observation and student survey mechanisms. I also took charge of the marketing drive for our September intake. I also worked closely on the development of The British College (our proposed sister college in Kathmandu), with the aim of setting-up a successful transnational education venture with initial degree validation status. I introduced a structure of governance that put the student at the centre of his/her learning development experience; this process builds conduits and allows the student to progress both academically, managerially and socially. Griffith college is the largest independent college in Southern Ireland whose degrees (at that time) were accredited by Nottingham Trent University in Pakistan. Students in Karachi could do all of their degree in Karachi, or do part of their degree with the option of transferring to Griffith College in Ireland to complete. Students in Karachi could do all of their degree in Karachi, or do part of their degree with the option of transferring to Griffith College in Ireland to complete. The project was about growth through recruitment and during my tenure I quadrupled the number of students choosing to study in Ireland.Students were predominantly from Pakistan, but students were also recruited from Bangladesh, KSA, Kazakhstan and Nepal. I was responsible for all operational, financial and administrative matters, reporting to our Board of Governors. I had an active administrative staff of 10 people encompassing a senior management team of 4 who reported directly to me. I employed 12 visiting, part-time and full-time faculty working at any given time of the year. My job was as much external liaison as it was internal mechanics as I was charged with re-positioning the college in a drive to attract more students and increase pathways. The college itself was registered with the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan, the Government of Sindh and the Education Training Awards Council in Ireland with all contracts and extensions being brokered by me. I controlled a yearly budget of Rs 100,000,000 excluding a new building development phase of around Rs 5,000,000 for 4 additional classrooms, and an additional students common room (financed by ‘friends of GCK’; a sponsorship initiative instigated by me on arrival). I re-organised the academic reporting structure and empowered the senior management team to make decisions and be accountable. I was heavily involved in re-positioning the college through media spotlights and local awareness building exercises. Consequently I had overall responsibility for marketing, budget maintenance, hiring of staff, their development and evaluation, timetabling, programme evaluation and quality (in accordance with Warwick University regulations), and assessment. I served on the Academic Board of Studies at the University of Warwick; responsible for the operational and quality expectations built into the contract. I directly recruited the students from mainland China, Taiwan, Korea and locally from Hong Kong; also the provision and coordination of an accommodation service fell within my remit. All students who achieved satisfactory grades were transferred in the main, to good UK universities (33% of all graduates transferred to Warwick University) with others opting to continue their studies in America and Australia. My other major duty was to act as conduit between the awarding bodies (the UK universities) and the Hong Kong Education Authority, who allowed distance learning programmes (Master and Doctorate) to take place, under licence in Hong Kong. Part of my job was recruitment and I represented the British Council at recruitment fairs in Hong Kong, Guanzhou, Chengdu and Macau. I completed one viability project whilst at BCHK where I ascertained the growth or shrinkage potential of closing satellite training facilities and re-housing them at central HQ in Hong Kong Island. My major achievement was the development of a vocational bridge curriculum which allowed students direct entry, on completion, into the workplace, or onto Diploma. I therefore served on several Emirati employer liaison committees aimed at garnering their needs, producing relevant vocational curriculum to meet those needs and matching potential employees with employers. A key part of my job in the UAE was to monitor the effectiveness of foreign funded universities on Emirati soil, so instead of spearheading transnational education though establishment and delivery in my latter jobs, I had the job to ascertain the quality of applying universities.
