I was the first Head of Security for British American Tobacco Industries, the world's second largest tobacco group with presence in 180+ countries. My goal to have a British American Tobacco CSO on the board within ten years was born in 1992. when I left the British Army (military intelligence) and joined BAT, managing a huge, well-organised security function that included 85 security managers and many more staff.Finally, in the early 2000s, my supervisor became the Legal & Security Director and my philosophy of having security take a seat on the board was fully recognised. In 2002, BAT security went under the biggest audit of any function at BAT ever, and came out with some impressive metrics, in particular: For every $2 spent on security the company avoided $1 of loss from theft and other crime.
