David’s entire career has been dealing with every aspect of the Semiconductor industry in every part of the world. His dealings have always been with the “movers and shakers”, be they industry leaders, government or institutions, and have established a comprehensive understanding of the commercial purpose and opportunity of semiconductors. For this reason, along with being a PLC Chair and other experience he brings a far wider understanding and scope of knowledge of the industry than most. A graduate in electrical and electronic engineering and a co-founder of Calderwood Han, David began his career in telecommunications and semiconductors initially in Europe and subsequently in Hong Kong, leading the design and manufacture of first-generation PC clones and PC UNIX implementations. He has spent most of his career working with and advising public and private technology companies on product development and market strategy, funding and structural reorganisation, and has extensive international experience in this area. His thirty years’ executive search experience includes key director roles with three well-known London practices, prior to his establishing the Company in 1992. Initially, he pioneered the placement of senior executives for the majority of Europe’s high technology (semiconductor) and biotechnology businesses. This work afforded him, inter alia, considerable exposure to venture capital and start-up operations. Later assignments have covered a broad spectrum of industry and commerce, with particular reference to aerospace, defence, transport, FMCG, retail, banking and finance. His activity is worldwide.David currently has a wide advisory and non-Executive portfolio including as a PLC Chairman, and is a strong advocate for the future of semiconductors in the UK. This is typified by his formation of RED Semiconductor Ltd.

This invention by a small team of brilliant computer scientists needs to be connected with market opportunities in a fastmoving dynamic industry where a small number of players currently dominate, but where the recognised and feared limitations of ‘Moore’s Law’ creates opportunity for RED’s new microprocessor architecture to meet the rapidly advancing demands of Tech Megatrends like Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Transportation, Augmented and Virtual Reality. -

Managing Director (Retired)Calderwood Han Limited Dec 1992 - Dec 2020In late 2019 I retired along with Eng Juan Han and Calderwood Han Limited was wound down. We both remain active in our other interests and businesses.I was the founder of Calderwood Han Limited, established in 1992 as an International Management Consultancy, headquartered in London. Its principal activities were retained executive search, including the formation of start-up companies. The nucleus of the Company was a cohesive team of mature consultants, some of whom have worked together since 1984; together they were substantial experience in worldwide search. In practice, our first priority was to understand clearly our clients’ mission, culture, the nature of their business - especially strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats - and, most importantly, the personality and management style of the key people. We placed considerable importance on ensuring that the chemistry between client and consultant was readily recognised and exhibits the required compatibility. We emphasised quality and focus on the delivery of a thorough and total service. We helped build entire teams for many start-up companies that became multi-millions to billion-pound companies. Our clients included Hutchison Three, Cambridge Silicon Radio, Analog Devices and many other semiconductor companies including start-ups, and international corporates including Glencore PLC, Anglo American PLC, Rio Tinto, Thales, Unilever and many others.

AdvisorSustainable Pipeline Systems Apr 2010 - Aug 2015MASiP: Mobile Automated Spiral Intelligent Pipe – A technology breakthrough for the Hydrogen EraSPS innovative MASiP pipeline system is a low carbon solution to the challenge of creating a net zero onshore pipeline network. Designed and tested with 100% high pressure hydrogen gas. MASIP can also be used with other fluids such as CO2, water oil and natural gas. MASiP combines automated continuous infield pipe manufacture with direct installation of flexible pipe. Digital monitoring with embedded optical fibre feeds into a fatigue life algorithm for data interpretation enables pipe condition assessments in real time. SPS field trials are under way at our own trial site in North Yorkshire.

ConsultantAlexander Hughes Jul 1990 - Apr 1992Paris, FrAnother excellent learning ground, where I developed a diverse city client base the highlight probably working for the Bank of England, BACS and APACS at the height of the technical revolution of electronic money.I found I was the significant revenue generator with an insufficient reward and decided to set up my own company Calderwood Han Limited. -
ConsultantTyzack Partners Jul 1989 - Jul 1990London, London, GbA career opportunity to become a "City" head-hunter. A fabulous year of learning but as a technologist I found the house style superficial and shallow. Having said this the contacts I made in business and government during this time have stood me in good stead ever since. -

Managing, Engineering And Technology Search ConsultantKramer Westfield Jul 1984 - Sep 1987Farnham, Surrey, GbJoined and led The Semiconductor Technical Executive Search and consulting team, I specialised in designing and building engineering teams for design and manufacturing. During this time amongst other activities, I was responsible for building engineering teams for 45 IC fabs across Europe between 1985 and 1992, the last time the industry saw such a dramatic manufacturing expansion. So, as you can imagine I have taken a great interest in what the industry is now doing. My part of Kramer was Acquired by the ARC Group. -
Engineering ManagerColex Ltd Hk Dec 1982 - Jul 1984I was approached to set up and run a test engineering group in Hong Kong for Colex Ltd. The state of the manufacturing operation we inherited meant I almost overnight moved from Test Engineering Manager to overall Engineering head reporting to the founders for all delivery engineering functions from development through manufacturing and test to quality.During this time my engineering team was one of the first to crack the IBM Bios, and even today I am somewhat of a core-celeb amongst IBM engineers of that era who I still interact with today.
