I'm the founder and editor of two digital sites about public affairs: Inside Philanthropy, which covers the world of charitable giving, and Blue Tent, which offers guidance to donors for investing in progressive change. I've written extensively on trends in philanthropy, as well as American politics and public policy. My books include "The Givers: Wealth, Power, and Philanthropy in a New Gilded Age." More recently, my work has focused on Democratic electoral strategy and progressive infrastructure. Before launching Inside Philanthropy in 2014 and Blue Tent in 2021, I co-founded Demos, the national think tank, where I held various leadership positions and conducted research on a wide range of issues related to economic and political inequality, as well as writing on moral values, professional ethics and business. In addition to "The Givers," I'm the author of seven widely reviewed books on domestic and international issues, including "The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead." I've appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs, including major networks and national NPR shows and published numerous op-ed and feature articles in such places as the New York Times and Washington Post. I've spoken at over 150 universities and associations around the U.S., frequently as a keynote speaker. I'm a graduate of Hampshire College and received my Ph.D. from Princeton University, where I studied American politics and international relations. I live in Santa Monica, California.
