In 2001, I was welcomed onto the Group board as an executive director, becoming Executive Chair in 2017, and remain as enthused as ever by the wide variety of opportunities that my career continues to afford. Switching between consulting and management roles enabled me to balance my twin passions of people and projects, working across the Asia Pacific region, and have been fortunate to help deliver a range of landmark projects including the America's Cup Viaduct Basin Redevelopment, Project Manukau (a $400+m wastewater project), the Melbourne Airport A380 runway widening, culminating in the Victoria Desalination plant. However while scale can be enticing, smaller community-based projects are invariably just as rewarding given the tangible impact they can have on helping to bind communities.I am a firm believer in the value of education in helping to build a more equitable society and hence my opportunity to "give back" as Chair of The University of Auckland Foundation. Further our quality of life and economic prosperity, particularly as a Kiwi, is intrinsically linked to nature and the environment that surrounds us. The role of the Aotearoa Circle, of which I am a Guardian, is to bring the public and private sectors together to help deliver prosperity while addressing the impact of climate change and regenerating Aotearoa's biodiversity, which continues to decline. It remains a privilege to serve society and this can only be achieved by proactively seeking and listening to a wide range of perspectives, thereby understanding societies dreams and aspirations, and by respecting and acknowledging indigenous rights and customs.Our world remains full of challenges, none more so than how we collectively respond to global warming, the devastating impacts of which are becoming increasingly apparent. Further it would appear that the urgency with which the world needs to act is yet to be fully acknowledged. What excites me about my Meridian Energy governance role, is that Meridian is an amazing company with a wealth of opportunity and is uniquely positioned to help New Zealand meet its decarbonisation commitments and thereby deliver greater prosperity while enhancing biodiversity along the way. Toitū te marae a Tāne-Mahuta, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata (if the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive).
