States Of Guernsey Veterinary Officer
CurrentI am the veterinary officer (VO) for the governments of Guernsey, Alderney & Sark (The Bailiwick). I provide advice to the competent authorities of the governments concerning animal health, welfare, veterinary public health and veterinary medicines. Animal health duties include organisation and implementation of health surveillance, investigation of suspected notifiable disease, determination of import requirements, and communication with other countries regarding their import requirements for trade from the Bailiwick. I am supported by local authorised veterinarians (AV) with the Pet Travel Scheme, equine and small livestock exports. I am responsible for health ‘returns’ for The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). I am also responsible for the Artificial Insemination Centre in Guernsey, exports of food waste and I am the VO for aquatic health.Animal welfare duties include the drafting of welfare codes and guidance, the licencing of activities involving animals and the welfare of animals in transport and at the time of slaughter. I am responsible for gathering and collating evidence in criminal animal welfare investigations to support the police. I am a member of the Guernsey Local Resilience Forum.Veterinary public health role include Official Veterinarian (OV) duties in accordance with EU Regulation 854/2005 at the Bailiwicks abattoirs, residue and microbiological testing, carcase temperature logging and Trichinella testing. I am assisting with draft legislation concerning responsible pet ownership and the avoidance of dog fouling through the instigation of DNA testing. I have a seat on the Radiation Protection Committee and the Health Protection Committee of Health & Social Care (HSC) chaired by the Director of Public Health. I am the VO for the Guernsey Dairy.With regard to veterinary medicine I assist Customs with the drafting of open licences for ‘special imports’ and provide advice on the correct disposal of spent veterinary medicines.
