This was a Cleveland Cliffs facility.Worked from the feasibility study, thru re-start engineering, purchasing new equipment. Part of a two man team to upgrade 17 PLC systems to Allen Bradley Control Logix platform.Part of project management team to purchase equipment, work with Engineering companies, act as our own general contractor to revitalize and startup iron ore mine that had been shut down for 5 years. Relocated to Wabush Newfoundland, for the last year to restart operations.Part of commissioning and startup team. I was brought on by Majority ownership to help develop and engineer our first operation in Keewatin, MN. We designed initial process and layout of plant. Acted as our own general contractor for build out. I also programmed entire plant and process, developed our own PLC and HMI, based on Allen Bradley Control Logix PLC platform, with Allen Bradley RSViewSE as the HMI (Human Machine Interface), Commissioned and started up the plant. Once plant up and running I acted as safety / HR / engineering / maintenance and operations manager.

Ran day to day operations of VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelt Furnaces), ESR (Electro Slag Remelt Furnaces), 3700 ton open die forging press. Glama automatic track forge press manipulator.Republic Special Metals manufactures vacuum arc and electro slag remelted steels and alloys in finished bar stock, semi-finished billets. The company specializes in the production of remelted steels and alloys for critical applications. Republic Special Metals offers forged and hot rolled products, including customized remelting ingots, rounds and slabsWorked closely with ownership “John Dimitrieff, Patriot Forge, to develop plant layout for new special metals plant in North Jackson Ohio. The North Jackson facility is a state of the art facility that produces specialty steels, including nickel alloy, stainless steel and low alloy steels melted via vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by either electro-slag remelting (ESR) or vacuum-arc remelting (VAR).I was Instrumental in negotiations and purchase of major equipment for new plant. Part of site location team.- SMX 651 Radial Forging machine – from SMS Meer, at the time of purchase was a copy of the worlds largest hydraulic radial forging press, the original machine built for Bao Steel, Shanghai China. Visited Bao Steel several times in the investigation process of plant design.- 13 Mton VIM “Vacuum induction melting and casting furnace”, from ALD Vacuum Technologies, Hanau, Germany.

The Mesabi Nugget Project was formed to develop and apply Kobe Steel Itmk3 iron nugget process in a commercial venture at a location in Northern Minnesota. Mesabi Nugget is a Minnesota limited liability company. Mesabi Nugget, LLC, was formed by Ferrometrics, Inc., Kobe Steel, Ferrous Resources, LLC (a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics, Inc.), and Iron Units LLC, (a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc).

Promoted to SDI Butler Flat Rolled Division plant electrical engineer. Manage plant engineering projects and improvements, supervise plant electrical personnel, maintain and support production at entire Butler Flat Rolled Division.

Effectively utilized mini-mill philosophy, in fast paced design, construction, commissioning, and operations of new Direct Reduced Iron Plant. Total cost of project $135,000,000.00, broke ground – Oct. 97, made first DRI production – Oct. 98, tapped first ladle of liquid iron – Mar. 99. Responsibilities include all aspects of plant electrical design and integration from main power distribution (345,000 - 34,500 - 4,160 - 480 volts to 24 volts), to all systems control, (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation, Level 2 data collection). I was the 5th member hired on the initial IDI team that represented and negotiated IDI’s interest in all major purchases and design of equipment; (1) L. Lehtinen – VP General Manager, (2) CFO, (3) Mechanical Engineer, (4) Plant Manager, (5) Electrical Engineer – D. Chappie. The Iron Dynamics management group acted, as it’s own general contractor during the construction of the project. Directly responsible for managing all electrical aspect of design, construction, commissioning, maintenance and operations of this Greenfield project, from before first ground break, through production and maintenance support. During evolution of IDI plant, we have reprogrammed and modified 85% of the original vendor supplied PLC and HMI, in house. Major areas of plant include: rotary rail car dumper, material handling, ore prep & beneficiating, Williams Patent Crusher & Pulverizer, MHIA rotary hearth dryer, Bricmont - 50 meter rotary hearth furnace (when built - largest in world), Mannesmann Demag 48 MVA submerged arc furnace, water treatment plant, Wheelabrator RHF offgas system, Voest SAF offgas system, GE gear – main sub station, primary and secondary sub stations, power distribution, 1500 kva Caterpillar emergency generator ABB continuous gas monitoring.

Direct supervisor of “United Auto Workers”; plant engineering electricians and pipe fitters, automation mechanics and electricians. Accountable, for daily maintenance and operations, of equipment associated with the stamping press area. Work with various types of stamping presses; Danly, USI Clearing, Bliss, Verson, Komatsu, IHI, from 600 to 2000 ton models. Miscellaneous types of automation and robotics utilized at plant; ISI Robotics, Kuka Robots, Oldfstrom Volvo, along with an assortment of PLC controls; Allen Bradley PLC5, Square “D” SyMax, Cincinnati Milacron. Oversee installation and implementation of new technology.

Direct supervisor of C-1 electrical repairmen and motor inspectors, responsible for the troubleshooting and repair of all electrical equipment, including Modicon 984 programmable controllers, Westinghouse Accutrol 700 AC drive units, and all other associated plant equipment. Perform plant engineering and implementation of new technology and systems.

Direct supervisor of electronic repairmen, motor inspectors, and millwrights, responsible for the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of all electrical and mechanical equipment within Continuous Caster Department.

Direct turn supervisor of motor inspectors, electrical repairmen, millwrights, pipe fitter, and welders, responsible for the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all electrical and mechanical equipment of both #1 and #2 coke plants.
