Georgia State University's Creative Media Industries Institute was launched in November 2014. Its main aspiration is to implement and grow public higher educational programs to further facilitate Atlanta's emergence as a creative capital. As the CMII founding director, I worked with colleagues to develop programs around these goals: (1) To expand the quality and quantity of GSU media/arts graduates ready to start successful creative careers; (2) To build connections with the information and entertainment industries that will help our students launch entrepreneurial endeavors; (3) To develop programs that can connect GSU's diverse student population with the industry in ways that can help address wider diversity crises in many creative sectors; and (4) To strategize partnerships to develop industry-relevant research. A major gift from the Woodruff Foundation ($22.8 million, the largest grant or gift in GSU history) has enabled a full launch of these efforts. As work accelerates to supplement strong existing GSU degree programs in computing, graphic arts, film, music, and creative writing, I and my colleagues are at work to develop innovative interdisciplinary educational/credentialing pathways (e.g., certificates, advanced degrees, BA+MA) in areas like game design and development, and media entrepreneurship, that adds value to core training in the artistic work of filmmaking, graphics, coding, sound design, and journalism now underway at GSU. The Woodruff-funded content creation facility grand opened in October 2017.Please contact me if you are interested in these issues or would like to discuss ways to partner. While our work is Atlanta-focused, the larger goals connect with industry-wide opportunities. Since our launch, and given our growth, I now support CMII's industry-connected executive director, where my role is to strategize growth in our academic training programs.

In the latter, students create unique programs of study that combine coursework in business fundamentals, entrepreneurship, creative industries studies, and courses in their area of core creative interest. The goal is career readiness, new models for media entrepreneurship, and educational pathways clearly connected to cutting edge content creation technologies (especially performance capture, games and other immersive world creation, and virtual reality). My role is to coordinate those programs in the wider CMII context of industry connectivity, and to help strategize the Institute's research trajectory.
