Dissertation: Modeling of Deformation Mechanisms in Magnesium Alloys at Elevated TemperaturesThe prospect of better fuel economy has prompted increased interest in magnesium alloys in the automobile industry due to its relatively low density compared to iron and aluminum alloys. However, widespread use of magnesium alloys in the industry is prevented by its low formability. Elevated temperature deformation of magnesium is promising due to the activation of additional slip systems at a lower resolved shear stress and the increased activation of other deformation mechanisms including grain boundary sliding and grain boundary diffusion. This work has utilized finite element modeling of a two dimensional microstructure to predict the influence of grain size and texture on the flow stress and deformation mechanisms as a function of strain rate. The results of tensile tests and the subsequent observations of the tensile specimens were used to characterize the material and provide validation for the model.
