Product Engineer Placement StudentCummins Inc. Aug 2022 - Aug 2023Daventry, England, United KingdomAs a Product Engineer for the 78L engine, my responsibilities included:- Leading and supporting proactive Robust Design improvements, working with supplier quality to improve drawing requirements, and designing parts from concept to finished product.- Leading a cross-functional team to investigate and fix exhaust manifold gasket blowout issue. Worked with Analysis to build and evaluate a model for simulating vibrational and thermal loads. Coordinated with Applied Mechanics to perform sealing pressure test, following production assembly method, and use a hydraulic press to define a Load-Deflection curve. Used Excel data processing and graphing tools to inform engineering decisions and produce concise documentation. Presented regular progress updates to customer and senior management. Worked with Emissions department to understand regulatory limits and thus inform gasket design. Give direction to Service department to implement fix in the field, as well as monitoring design performance over lifecycle.- Applying the design process for new components to meet Engineering requirements. One example was a bracket to support an air inlet tube, that had to withstand static structural and vibrational loads. Design required multiple iterations to meet manufacturing, service and assembly requirements. Worked closely with Analysis to provide inputs and boundary conditions, as well as providing engineering judgement on where to make appropriate simplifications to ensure model accuracy. Followed Validation and Verification checklist to ensure company requirements for robust designs were met.In this role I developed the following skills:- GD&T using ASME Y14.5- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) - Verification and Validation (V&V)- 7-step problem solving- Creo Parametric- Creo Drawing- Ansys Mechanical- Excel- Team Leadership- Stakeholder Management -
Digital Humanities InternUniversity Of Southampton Feb 2022 - May 2022Southampton, England, United KingdomI researched use cases for photogrammetry and 3D printing. This is used to image and reproduce physical objects as 3D printed objects. This involved training to use 3D printing and photogrammetry software and familiarising with the equipment to experiment with different prints. I learnt about the limitations of these technologies, as well as how to choose the optimal settings for the best quality prints (using Meshroom, Blender and Ultimaker Cura). I also supported the establishment of the Digital Humanities Hub, which was relatively new at the university, by attending training events and community meetings.
