I've been very fortunate most of my life to love what I do for work from building custom computers in high school to developing open source software for the use of cryptographic smart cards in embedded environments that's now in use in millions of terminals and set top TV boxes, to being one of the fortunate startup founder CEO's that was able to take their company to exit to a major security company - Verisign. I was Entrepreneur in Residence for a venture capital firm and I've been able to help transform a long time publisher into a software technology company by helping build a team of software and product management and acquiring a mobile applications company. My last real job was co-founder and CEO of Censys which I helped launch and take to market. I love building teams of smart people and taking new products to market at the earliest stages.I studied information security at Purdue University in the late 90s developing an open source software stack for using cryptographic smart cards in embedded environments - many of you probably use it when you insert your chip card into the terminal at most stores now. This led to numerous consulting gigs ranging from Apple, HP, Sun, and government agencies including an architect position for secure credentialing at Department of Homeland Security. In this role I helped NIST develop standards for U.S. government identification technologies - used by every U.S. government employee and contractor today. I subsequently built a company called TrustBearer Labs with incredibly smart people which we sold to VeriSign and Symantec in 2010. Since then I've renovated historic buildings into mixed use apartments/retail/tap room, started an experimental indoor shrimp farm, turned around a struggling software company, acquired companies, and served on numerous startup boards helping them with raises, product and go to market strategy. I was one of the co-founders of Censys taking university IP from tech transfer and turning that into a cybersecurity SaaS product for doing attack surface discovery serving many of the Fortune 2000. After getting Censys to escape velocity, I transitioned out so I could focus on earlier stage ideas and use my experiences to teach others.

Co-Founder / CeoCensys Mar 2019 - Apr 2021Ann Arbor, Michigan, UsCensys is a cutting edge cybersecurity company with Internet scale visibility I helped co-found with several researchers in 2017 using technology developed at the University of Michigan. It continually monitors every reachable server/device on the Internet, and can discover threat actors as well as hidden assets and vulnerabilities. I helped launch the company, obtain investment from tier 1 VC's, build the team, develop initial product direction and go to market strategy. Censys is a critical piece of security intelligence for major Fortune 2000 companies and governments worldwide. Discover new threats and assess their global impact. https://censys.com -

Associate Director Of Innovation And New Venture DevelopmentOur Sunday Visitor May 2013 - Nov 2015Huntington, In, UsMy work with OSV started as a contractor in 2013 and eventually lead to full time employment. At OSV, I worked with a great executive management team to put strategic pieces in place that would enable a 100-year old publishing company to become a software as a service company. I did this by assisting the takeover of an online giving application, transitioning a content management system acquisition into profitability, acquiring a mobile applications company, and finally launching new, strategic product initiatives. I worked in a team with the President and CFO evaluating, negotiating, and fulfilling strategic software acquisitions. I worked with the same team and HR to lead a team to assess and transition a financially struggling acquisition and took it to profitability in 18 months by refocusing product strategy and workforce rebalancing. With HR I assisted in building a formidable team of product management, QA, and additional development resources to take on a larger set of software responsibility. Finally, I worked in strategy teams with the CTO, President, and Marketing to map out company digital product strategy for the foreseeable future. -
Entrepreneur In ResidenceElevate Ventures Sep 2011 - Apr 2013Taking my experience raising money and being on both the buy and sell side of software acquisitions – I joined Elevate Ventures as an EIR for the Northeast Indiana region. In this role I would assist technology startups in tuning their investment pitches, create strategic financial and growth plans, help acquire talent when necessary, and help acquire capital through a network of angel investors and a state run venture capital fund. This was a part time role as I was also managing a large construction project where I acquired and renovated a downtown historic building into loft style apartments and a restaurant during this time.

Senior Product ManagerSymantec Aug 2010 - Jul 2012San Jose, California, UsAs product manager I was responsible for transitioning the acquired TrustBearer products to VeriSign and subsequently Symantec after that acquisition - maintaining all former TrustBearer customers and integrating our products into the larger Symantec portfolio and process to scale it's sales. I was responsible for working with sales, marketing, support, and executive management to build strategy around a variety of multi factor authentication and security products for commercial and government usage. I transitioned management of my former team into functional roles within Symantec. Additionally I was responsible for transitioning the office from our location in Indiana to headquarters in Mountain View, CA. -
Founder / CeoTrustbearer Labs May 2006 - Apr 2010Fort Wayne, In, UsI took TrustBearer Labs from a single person consultancy to a very profitable industry recognized company with secure passwordless authentication products serving healthcare, government, and corporate sectors having offices in Indiana and Washington DC. We did this through organic growth and the raise of angel and venture capital money. Our product TrustBearer Access was one if not the earliest products existing that replaced passwords with public key credentials across a variety of devices such as smart cards, biometrics, PKI and others similar to FIDO and other initiatives. As CEO I was responsible for much of the companies operations including key hires, business development, managing HR and legal obligations, contracting, and reporting to our board of directors and investors. Given my background in product development and research we were regularly first to market with a number of technologies and prided ourselves in our agility and lean operation. One of our patents: PCT/US2007/069253 was created to securely expose cryptographic hardware tokens to the Internet in a dynamic fashion allowing continuous improvement without touching the desktop computer. At the time of our sale we had achieved 7 figure EBITDA and had customers ranging from Social Security Administration, Federal Aviation Authority, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Xerox, Samsung, Sharp, Apple Computer, and other noteworthy customers. This was a very exciting time and while I'm proud of what was accomplished - I owe most of my success to the outstanding team of people I was able to recruit. In 2010, I negotiated the sale of the company to VeriSign after a yearlong strategic relationship. VeriSign subsequently sold us with their authentication division to Symantec just a few months later. -
ConsultantDepartment Of Homeland Security May 2004 - Jan 2006Washington, Dc, UsAt DHS I was responsible for working for the CIO helping establish the direction of the federal government credentialing program (PIV) as mandated by the HSPD-12 presidential directive. This included working with and setting the standards for their PKI infrastructure and all the infrastructure and technologies required for managing smart cards, biometric enrollment, and the various applications required for single sign on. In this role I participated in developing standards with NIST, and evaluating 3rd party software products for compliance. -
Software Developer / Research ScientistSchlumberger 1997 - 2003Houston, Texas, UsAt Schlumberger Research I developed the first Internet enabled online human resource system using at the time cutting edge web techniques. I developed one of the first available over the air Internet proxy communication systems for well logging trucks and finally started developing the first cross-platform, open source software stack for smart cards and other cryptographic devices. -
Technical ConsultantApple Computer 2000 - 2001Cupertino, California, UsAt Apple I developed the first smart card subsystem for Mac OS 9 and then Mac OS X based on the Microsoft PC/SC standard. We eventually built this into a cryptographic framework that tied into login, mail, and the web browser.
