Profile of David CoughtrieDavid Coughtrie, born in Ayrshire and educated at Ayr Academy, studied architecture at Strathclyde University. He worked in both the private and public practice in Scotland before moving to London to work in the transport sector, as a senior project architect. An aptitude for project management led to high profile appointments in the UK and overseas, becoming an executive director of London Transport, Managing Director of London Transport International and President of LTIC Inc in the USA. Subsequently, he set up his own management consultancy, DCA Ltd, advising World Bank, government and corporate clients on strategic options for public transport in Europe, Africa, Middle and Far East and the Americas. Appointed Claims Director of Eurotunnel plc he secured a substantial financial and contractual settlement with TML, Anglo-French consortium contractors for the Channel Tunnel. He has had extensive experience of the planning, design and construction of transport systems and infrastructure projects widely in the UK and overseas, including rail franchising. He has provided leadership and vision to multidisciplinary teams developing transportation and urban integration master plans in cities, most recently Dubai and Jeddah. Although semi-retired, he retains a strong interest in transportation planning and architecture providing pro bono advice in related issues. David served on UK government committees, is a long-standing Member of the Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, as well as a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He has lectured on UITP programmes for urban transport planning and design. He has undertaken urban planning and design for regeneration work in his local community, pro bono. He is Past President of the Caledonian Society of London, former Chairman, now Vice President of The Caledonian Club in Belgravia. He founded and continues to organise The Caledonian Lecture, an annual event to recognise Scots who have made their mark abroad. He chaired the Property Committee of the Royal Scottish Corporation, known as ScotsCare. He was Chairman of the Commercial Education Trust for six years, based in the City, promoting commercial education at all levels and sectors: ‘putting learning to work’ and is now Chairman Emeritus. David was appointed a Freeman of the City of London in 2016.He retains a keen interest in Ayrshire, recently renovated family property and is a long-term Patron of Dalmellington Silver Band.
