Post Doctoral Research Fellow (Organic Materials Innovation Centre)
Portfolio of responsibilities included the development of smart sequestering agents for CBRN decontamination. Utilizing high throughput parallel synthesis, radiochemistry and environmental remediation technology the RN sections of this work involved regular use of open isotopic sources (including 60Co, 75Se, 90Sr, 137Cs 241Am, 226Ra and Pu amongst others). Smart sensing elements involved the development of novel polychalcophene materials for Field Effect Transistor (FET) and agent selective detection applications. Liaising with various academic, governmental and industrial collaborators the role regularly involved preparing presentations and peer reviewed reports for a range of scientific and non-scientific audiences. (34 papers and 8 Patents published) Internal teaching role included supervision of scientific undergraduate teaching labs, workshops and tutorials. Program management included support of undergraduates (BSc & MChem) and postgraduates (MSc & PhD) in the capacity of tutor and second supervisor, providing line-management whilst in studies. Other research interests included: synthesis and functionalization of polymers and particles for the selective remediation of water, surfaces and atmospheres; functionalization of carbon structures; polymer chemistry (including RAFT, ATRP and functionalized micro-porous resins); organic electronics, chalcophene compounds (selenophene chemistry in particular) and nanotechnology.
