In the late 70s and early 80s I worked as a freelance journalist, with work appearing in everything from the Houston Chronical (above the fold) to the Financial Times. I was soon hired by a multi-million-dollar energy firm in Houston, Texas, where I rose from an entry level in-house communications position to Head of Corporate Communications. I was responsible for conceiving, planning and generating internal communications for 11,000+ employees, which consisted of monthly newspapers, a quarterly 32-page magazine, plus outward facing communications including executive speechwriting, press releases, feature articles, white papers and, on occasion, crisis communications. In the late 80s I was headhunted to join the Corporate Communications Department of another global petrochemical engineering firm in Houston and was soon asked to relocate to the UK, where I have remained.Having married and wishing to be closer to my rural family home in England, I abandoned London corporate life to join a small local PR agency that had won a significant account with a broadcast television technology research, development and manufacturing firm. I consulted on accounts involving everything from contact lenses to heavy equipment, but my work was dominated by television, which was just beginning its explosion into the digital age and would shape the next 20+ years of my career.I was later poached by a broadcast industry client and spent six very enjoyable years generating internal communications and external press and publicity for the company worldwide. However, in the early 2000s, overextension to keep pace with advances in digital technology had the unforeseen effect of putting a lot of businesses on the back foot. One day, the Marketing Department, of which I was part, joined the ranks of the redundant.Fortunately, my experience enabled me to spend another two decades in the broadcast industry, writing independently for more than 50 manufacturers, suppliers and related agencies (not simultaneously!). I have researched and written thousands of press releases; feature articles; opinion pieces; product launch collateral; white papers; web and advertising copy and - more recently - text for social media. I also attended and provided publicity support at numerous local, regional and international trade shows from London to Las Vegas to Singapore and beyond. I am today delighted to apply what I've learned to the benefit of Napier clients, coupled with the invigoration of working alongside an impressive cadre of talented, intelligent and highly energised colleagues.
