I have been contracted fulltime to Sky since January 2011 working on the Java-based electronic programme guide for Sky+ HD set top boxes.I have really enjoyed this hands-on software development from the first customer delivery through 2 releases per year of new functionality. Originally most of the functionality was based on signalling over satellite links but increasingly new functionality uses an internet connection to browse and download content and to provide services such as viewing recommendations. At first there was a lot of problem investigation and performance analysis to develop a stable product on a range of legacy boxes. Recent releases are only on the latest hardware so the old performance and memory constraints have been relaxed and we are mostly adding new features to retain customers and tempt them to rent and purchase movies and box sets.

For the first year I worked on requirements for Sky set top boxes when the product was being re-engineered using newly developed middleware and drivers. Then I worked on testing a port of the old software stack to new set top box hardware, so that the new boxes could start shipping before the new software was ready.Next I spent a year and a half in system integration, hunting problems in the new software stack: new drivers, new middleware, JVM and Java-based application (electronic programme guide).Finally I joined the London-based application development team, finishing development and stabilizing the product, then developing new customer features. This Java development role has been my highlight in S3.

During my time in Motorola I was promoted from Staff Engineer to Principal Staff Engineer and then to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff.The highlight of my time in Motorola was development of a knowledge based system for detecting and diagnosing network problems. Our Cork-based team handled most aspects of this product from development, trialling and pre-sales through customer support. We had a great team and everyone really understood the product and saw it in operation in customer control centres around the world. I worked on knowledge engineering for this product from 2000 to 2002.

System Engineer on Motorola IMS Core Network (June 2006 to April 2007) Technical Lead for Motorola WiMAX Network Manager (Oct 2005 to June 2006) - Led and mentored a distributed system engineering team to define requirements, interfaces, object model, rules and architecture. - The team included 13 Motorola engineers in Ireland, Israel, USA and 4 contract engineers in India. - Worked with development teams in Ireland and Israel, and a test team in Malaysia.

Technical Lead for Motorola Packet Core Manager (Jan 2004 to Sept 2005)- Wrote Performance Management requirements for a network manager for a packet core network. - Led a team on development and testing of the Performance Management subsystem. - Resolved critical problems during integration testing with Huawei equipment in China. Statistics Monitoring Prototypes for UMTS and iDEN Mobile Networks (2003)- Collaborated with Motorola experts on the development of key performance metrics for a UMTS network and of customer documentation for UMTS statistics. - Supervised development of a statistics monitoring tool for Motorola UMTS trials. - Developed a prototype that successfully detected problems in an iDEN mobile network.

Knowledge Engineer for GSM Mobile Phone Networks (2000 to 2002)- Led the knowledge specification team for a knowledge based system to detect and diagnose problems in Motorola GSM / GPRS mobile phone networks. - Encouraged field experts to use and improve the problem investigation knowledge by sharing it on the Motorola intranet, making the knowledge specifications easy to read, adding background notes and explanations, and adding links for users to submit improvements and corrections. - Improved the quality of new knowledge by enlisting key expert reviewers and using field data to validate new knowledge before implementation. - Won a best paper award at Motorola's Software / Systems / Simulation symposium for a paper on knowledge maintenance. Technical Lead for GSM Knowledge Based System (1996 to 1999)- Led a team of Motorola engineers and contractors from initial design and development, through customer trials and commercial deployment, to customer support of the knowledge-based product. - Provided technical direction for the product, consultancy to development and test staff, investigated major customer issues. - Iterated product functionality based on experience of using it in customer networks and according to customer priority. - Demonstrated the product during trials in many customer networks and by using the product as a Motorola tool during delivery of network services. - Built a full product lifecycle team covering everything from feature selection, through development and deployment, to customer training and support. - All team members understood the product and customer needs through spending time at customer sites.

Feature development work in C++ for a Motorola GSM network management system (1995) - Software feature developer for a network management system for Motorola GSM mobile phone networks. - Developed features in C++ from system requirements - Fully unit tested and integration tested the features I developed.System Engineer for Motorola GSM network management system (1991 to 1994) - Provided technical leadership to a group of software developers implementing the first version of the network management system for Motorola GSM mobile phone networks. - Supported the system at the customer site during deployment of the first Motorola GSM network in Sweden. This provided valuable learning for improvements to the functionality and maintainability of later releases of the product. - Documented detailed feature requirements for the network management system based on high level product needs. - Developed and documented the interface between the network management system and the network elements it managed, based on agreement / negotiation with the network element development teams. - Coordinated integration test of the network manager and the network elements.

Team lead for a group of 8 engineers developing a document management system on VAX/VMS. Digital was a great place to work and Galway is a lovely city but we had to return to live in Cork for family reasons.

I developed an X.25 bridge to allow communication for the first time between North Star local area networks. The CEO was delighted when I set it up between our North Star site in Cork and the company office in California, allowing email to be sent for the first time between the offices.I optimized our local area network drivers to greatly increase the throughput between computers on the same LAN.This was a great hands-on software development job but sadly the company became very unstable and I had to move on.

This was my first job after finishing university and a major attraction was that the first 9 months were spent training at the company headquarters in Los Angeles.I started as a diagnostic software engineer, developing board level diagnostics for Compucorp computers in C and assembler (Z80 and MC68000).Then I developed an Ethernet interface adapter. I designed the hardware and wrote the low level communication firmware.I also supervised a hardware engineer and we developed a hardware memory tester.Designing hardware, doing board layouts and bringing up the new hardware was great fun but I found software development a lot more logical (and less infuriating).Compucorp was a great company and I loved working there but it became very unstable so I had to find a more reliable job.
