David Dehenauw is a Belgian federal government meteorologist, working at the Royal Meteorological Institute. His specialties are general, marine and aviation meteorology. He focuses on techniques to forecast dangerous weather and is also manager of the Oceanographic Meteorological Service in Ostend (www.kustweerbericht.be).In 1999 and 2000 he participated in the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and St-Hubert,Belgium Gordon Bennett races as the official meteorologist. In 2002 he was part of the meteorogical team for the first and succesful solo non-stop round the world (RTW) balloon flight of US adventurer Steve Fossett. His name can be seen on the remaining balloon capsule in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. He is one of only two Belgians mentioned in that museum.In 2003, he helped guide succesfully the first balloon with open basket over the Atlantic and received a diploma from the British Royal Aero Club, awarded by His Royal Highness Prince Andrew.In 2005 and 2006, Dehenauw, as the sole meteorologist, guided Fossett around the world in the three Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer flights. In 2016 he supervised Fedor Konyukhov in his RTW balloon flight. He has thus guided five successive, succesful round-the-world flights and holds a world record in aviation meteorology.He lectured in the US (NCEP and NOAA headquarters) following the Fossett adventures and on numerous occasions in Belgium.He also occasionally provided weather forecasts for Sir Richard Branson privately or Virgin Atlantic Airways. He is an expert for Solar Impulse, the solar airplane piloted by Swiss adventurers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg.David Dehenauw is also a radio- (VRT-Radio 2) and tv (VTM+RTL) meteorologist, presenting in Dutch and French, being the first and only national weather presenter of Belgium.
