I have a strong passion for the conservation of marine species and eco-systems. As a result of this passion, I have been actively involved in a range of dedicated marine based research projects dating back to 1995. These projects include fine-scale monitoring of intertidal habitats to wildlife surveys of the open ocean. My area of expertise lies in cetacean research where I have worked in the field using a range of research techniques from all research platforms (land based, vessel, aerial and underwater). In the citizen science space, I am co-founder of two programs; The Two Bays Whale Project and Killer Whales Australia.In support of my field skills, I hold a current AMSA recognised Grade 1 Coxswain certification and own a small purpose built research vessel. As a highly experienced small vessel specialist, I have logged some 4,000 hours in close approach work in cetacean research in Australian, New Zealand, South Pacific and Antarctic waters. My experience operating small vessels includes close approach work with 12 species of cetacean ranging from common dolphins to Antarctic blue whales. Further supporting my field skills, I hold a Category A and B firearms licence and am trained in the use of the PAXARMS and Larson cetacean biopsy systems. Having a particular interest in cetacean strandings, I have attended over 30 stranding events, since 1984. My role at these events, include having a direct involvement in response, logistics, communication, scientific sampling and reporting.Outside of research activities, I have experience working in eco-tourism as well as with industry, which has led to being involved in environmental impact assessments, environmental monitoring, marine fauna observing and post operations recovery studies for the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors.
