  • Gaa Cúl Camps
    Gaa Coach/Camp Supervisor
Gaa Cúl Camps May 2010 - Aug 2013
    Mayo
For the past three years I have been employed during the summer months by the Mayo branch of the GAA, working in their Cúl Camps. The job requirements are to teach the fundamentals of Gaelic Football, Hurling, Rounders and functional movement games to children aged 5-13. My responsibilities for each week of coaching included; providing a safe environment for all children in attendance at the camp, making every childs expeirence at the camp throughly enjoyable and to develop the skills of the child. As a coach I was challenged to develop and teach appropriate games that were specific to the age category that I was dealing with. These games had to be: fun, challenging and inclusive in order to stimulate postive experiences in every child while subsequently developing their skills. Again, depending on age and abilitys, I had to adapt and progress games as appropriate order to continually challenge, include and progress each child. In my 3rd year as a coach I was selected to be camp supervisor of the first ever Ballaghaderreen Cúl Camp. Here, I took on an administrative role and was responsible for camp operation and management. As this was the first ever camp in this location, the future of the camp would depend on its success in the first year. As camp supervisor, I was responsible for all aspects of the day to day running of the camp. Some responsibilities included, participant registration, delegation of roles and responsibilities to the camp coaches, highlighting the rules and regulations of the camp to participants, dealing with complaints from coaches/parents and children, liasing with all stakeholders; ensuring sufficient equipment was available, handling of money, monitoring attendence, provision of gear at the end of the week to every child, marketing and the promotion of the camp.

As part of my undergraduate work experience, I traveled between primary schools in the Co. Sligo region, and coached children between the ages of 4-13, in the fundamental movement and technical skills of Gaelic football. I gained great experience in the designing and structuring of innovative and innovative lesson plans. I was challenged to adapt and progress games accordingly to ensure that all of the children were being continually challenged in the activities I included. I challenged myself to avoid repetition, and make sure there was a wide range of variation in my games and activities I selected in my lesson plans, this was to keep the sessions enjoyable for all of the children.
