Throughout my career I have made it a priority to provide excellent care to pediatric patients with gastrointestinal disorders while continuing to do research that can help improve patients’ lives on a larger scale. To that end I started my research career in a basic/translational immunology laboratory under the mentorship of Dr. Lloyd Mayer. I received NIH awards to study the development of immune tolerance through the skin and the utility of this route in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In parallel studies, I investigated the use of Chinese herbal therapies as immunomodulators in the treatment of IBD for which I have a Helmsley grant for a safety and tolerability trial that I designed. I also am studying the immune phenotype of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and antigen responses in IBD. By understanding more about diseases like IBD and EoE we will be better able to treat them and thus develop new therapies that improve the lives of our patients.
