I have been a musician all my life but have never felt confined to one instrument. Maybe it's because I'm certainly no singer. My parents started me on the recorder and by the end of high school, I also acquainted myself with the bassoon and some Renaissance double reeds. I knew from the age of 13 I wanted to focus on Baroque and Renaissance music as my primary interest, if not my profession.As an undergraduate violin student, I also took a year of french horn, bassoon, and trombone, and studied viola da gamba unofficially. I also took a semester of basso continuo realization.While working on my master's on violin I played in my school's baroque orchestra and in Ars Musica of Ann Arbor, one of the first professional period instruments orchestras in North America. I also began my first tenure with the Toledo Symphony and played in numerous semi-professional orchestras such as Flint and Saginaw MI. It was during this period I first developed an interest in jazz owing to several jazz-playing roommates who had great collections of music. I had actually made friends with Wynton Marsalis at the end of my undergrad years but it was in a completely classical atmosphere at Tanglewood, Mass.During my 5 years with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, I was able to form two early music groups, a recorder consort, and a baroque chamber ensemble. Returning to the mainland after 5 years for a career in baroque performance I found the economy in poor condition to support such a venture and auditioned for the Toledo Symphony once again which just happened to have openings. At the same time, Apollo's Fire, Cleveland's baroque orchestra, was having its first auditions and I joined that orchestra starting with its first season. I also began a baroque chamber group in Toledo which became the ensemble in residence at the Toledo Museum of Art. It was at this time I earned my second master's degree at Oberlin Conservatory but this time as a recorder player and in historical performance. I assistant taught viola da gamba and studied baroque violin. Since they had a great electronic music department I took advantage of that and have maintained my interest in electronic music with a studio of synthesizers, computers, and MIDI wind controllers. I became a member of the symphony's string quartet and formed the Zin String Quartet with some friends. I have enjoyed my career in Toledo, a town with much to offer including a wonderful school for the arts and one of the best Metroparks systems and art museums in the country.

The Old West End Baroque Ensemble was a chamber ensemble dedicated to the performance of Baroque chamber music based on historical interpretation and performed on historical instruments. Formed from musicians in the Toledo Symphony and the Cleveland area we were for many years the ensemble in residence of the Toledo Museum of Art, although we also performed at a number of local churches in Toledo, Cleveland and Ann Arbor that provided favorable acoustics. Although much of our work was based on my research into the historic principals and aesthetics of Baroque (and sometime Renaissance) music, the knowledge of other members with similar educations provided a convivial atmosphere of musical sharing and discussion that enabled us to "find" the music in rehearsal, rather than stick to a preconceived notion of performance.

As a Doctorate of Musical Arts student I taught Music Appreciation classes to a very impressive student body on a $10,000.00 per year stipend. It was a rewarding experience, as were my studies in historical performance on recorder and trombone, but the daily commute from Toledo and the demands of my orchestra job at home, students, and family life were overwhelming and had to take precedence over the doctoral program, which was nevertheless extremely informative.

I had always wanted to spend part of my life abroad and this position allowed me to play with a fine orchestra while becoming fluent in Spanish. Puerto Rico has a rich cultural heritage, the orchestra had a unique social life compared to US orchestras, and I enjoyed the tropical, outdoor life. One year I put more miles on my bicycle than on my car.

This was a more interesting job than it might seem. I drove flight crews from the Detroit Metro Airport to the Ann Arbor Inn (which no longer exists) and back in a large, well-appointed van. For some reason, many other classical musicians were also employed there and we formed some lasting friendships. The pilots in particular were very interesting and surprisingly cultured people and made for hours of fascinating conversation. The flight attendants brought their own perspectives but tended to be as deferential to the pilots in the van as they were in flight. I.e., the pilots usually got to choose the music, but were often very happy with the classical music that was already pre-selected.

No one should live a life without at least one food service job, and this was fine dining establishment. It taught me skills such as how to treat a customer well, good service, dressing properly for a job, working cheerfully, and being on time. I had tremendous respect for the manager and chef and learned much from them and the staff who trained me. (The Veronique now in Boston is a different establishment).
