Now in its 8th year, riders have cycled between state capitals over 7 – 9 days, in order to raise funds to support youth organisations. As a Committee of Management member for 10 years our role was to oversee the management of a Federally funded micro-budget to deliver Citizen Advocacy services to individuals with an Intellectual Disability in the North/Eastern region.The model of Citizen Advocacy would have to be considered one of the most effective methods for delivering Disability Services to the community. After our coordinators identified individuals in need of our services ("Proteges"), they would be "matched"… Show more As a Committee of Management member for 10 years our role was to oversee the management of a Federally funded micro-budget to deliver Citizen Advocacy services to individuals with an Intellectual Disability in the North/Eastern region.The model of Citizen Advocacy would have to be considered one of the most effective methods for delivering Disability Services to the community. After our coordinators identified individuals in need of our services ("Proteges"), they would be "matched" with members of the local community ("Advocates") who were willing to "buddy" with them across their area(s) of need.These often encompassed the issues of housing, work, legal, safety or Centrelink. Or the relationship that was formed may have purely been based on outings and interests.For much of the 10 years of my involvement with NECA we had around 30 odd matches, funded from a budget for 1-1.5 full time equivalents.If you do the sums you will realise that 30 community based volunteers delivering even fortnightly contact, provides some of the most vulnerable in our community with a volume of contact, services and friendship that 1.5 "Paid Advocacy" employees could only dream of delivering.Our achievements included the reengineering of operations based on self sufficiency rather than relying too heavily on the goodwill of volunteers and we rode out near dissolution resulting from proposed harsh funding cuts around 2007. Ironically, we then struggled to effectively manage the exuberant 60-70% increase in funding within our micro-operations (and within our charter) that resulted from a change of government.It was a great experience to be involved with NECA, incredibly rewarding and I can only encourage others to seek out these type of community based programmes and offer your skills.
