After leaving Adelaide in December 1976 for a two-year post-doc, obviously something happened, since I am still here in the U.S. I began my career at the University of Arkansas where -- for one whole week -- I was formally a colleague of a law professor by the name of Bill Clinton. Although my post-doc boss was one of the "FoB"s, and he and his wife had been part of the Clintons' social circle, I was not. After a year at Illinois as a Visiting Assistant Professor, I moved to Waco, Texas (years before the Branch Davidians) as Assistant Professor at Baylor University. In 1989, I moved to the chill plains of the north, to South Dakota State University as Associate Professor. It was during this part of my career that I learned what real cold is -- one winter I spent two weeks walking in to the lab in a –80°F (–62°C) wind chill (the air temperature was a balmy –40°). In 1997, I made my final move, to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as Professor and Chair. In the course of my career, I have published over 90 papers, and been issued 18 US patents. I have written four books, My research interests are in physical organic chemistry, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and the history of organic chemistry in Russia.I am a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Minireviews in Organic Chemistry, and the ad hoc Editorial Advisory Board of the Bulletin for the History of Chemistry. In 2017 I received the Albert Nelson MarquisLifetime Achievement Award, and in 2018 I won the HIST Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in the History of Chemistry sponsored and supported by the Division of the History of Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.
